SUMMARY:The Girl Without a Soul screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Girl Without a Soul (John H. Collins\, U.S. 1917\, 80 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nJohn H. Collins is one of the great "What if . . . ?" figures of American cinema\, a brilliantly creative filmmaker who went from being a costume department assistant to a major director within four short years before dying at the age of 31 in the 1918 influenza pandemic. Founding film curator James Card was a passionate devotee of Collins's work\, and it is through his influence that George Eastman House is the principal repository of Collins's few extant films\, which show both a subtle understanding of human nature and often breathtakingly daring cinematography and editing. The Girl Without a Soul stars Viola Dana (to whom Collins was married) in a dual role as twin sisters\, one of whom is a gifted violinist and the other a deeply troubled girl jealous of her sister's abilities and the love bestowed upon her by their violinmaker father. This jealousy and the violinist sister's unworldliness lead both into turbulent moral conflict\, which takes considerable fortitude from both to overcome. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:Greetings screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Greetings (Brian De Palma\, U.S. 1968\, 88 min.\, 35mm). \nGreetings was Brian De Palma's first great cinematic statement. It appeared on the eve of this country's most turbulent decade since the American Civil War\, and in advance of the efforts of an ostensibly "new" Hollywood to render the boundless energies of the counterculture into commodity form. Throughout this thrillingly erratic film\, De Palma seems to be searching for an attitude\, for a style\, that could be appropriate to the strangeness and violence of his moment. He openly samples from the French New Wave and American underground filmmakers such as Andy Warhol\, but also makes ample use of the particular resources available to him\, from the seedy streets and characters of late-sixties Manhattan—with its infinite list of internal contradictions—to the charisma and range of a young\, unknown actor named Robert De Niro. Ultimately\, however\, it is toward comedy that Greetings could be said to aspire. Even beyond its heady politics\, its film-historical fluency\, and its sharp-eyed critique of American society\, Greetings invites its audience to laugh. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:River Campus Libraries Observes Banned Books Week
DESCRIPTION:Lolita. To Kill a Mockingbird. The Great Gatsby. These books and many others are\, or at one time were\, banned or challenged in libraries\, schools\, and bookstores across the globe. In 1982\, the American Library Association launched Banned Books Week\, an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and express ideas. More than 11\,300 books have been challenged since 1982\, making the event and the attention it draws to the dangers of censorshop as important as ever. In honor of this year's Banned Books Week (September 27-October 3\, 2015)\, the River Campus Libraries is hosting a Read Out on Thursday\, October 1 from 3-4 p.m. in the Q&I area of Rush Rhees Library. University leadership\, faculty\, staff\, and students will read short passages in any language from their favorite banned or challenged books. Members of the Greater Rochester community are also invited to participate. \n [source: Rush Rhees Library website\, 2015-Sep-28]

SUMMARY:Charlie Hunter Trio musical performance
DESCRIPTION:"How's this for a sketch resume for the brilliant seven-string guitarist Charlie Hunter? He came up on the music-magic Berkeley\, Calif. scene in the '80s\, graduated to local hero status with his bands (his famed trio\, plus the Tj Kirk guitar extravaganza playing the music of Thelonious Monk\, James Brown and Rahsaan Roland Kirk) and ended up getting signed by Blue Note Records\, which released seven of his albums\, including Songs From the Analog Playground that introduced to most people the singing talent of the young Norah Jones. He walked away from the major label for his freedom and after some indie label action has been totally in charge of his music\, releasing albums on his own Charlie Hunter Music imprint. His new album\, Let the Bells Ring On\, features collaborators from his previous projects—trombonist Curtis Fowlkes and drummer Bobby Previte—who together join Charlie on a new journey. I've followed his career from his days playing with Michael Franti's Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy project in 1992 and his very first album\, 1993's self-titled trio release\, and remarkably each new recorded excursion found him getting better and stronger as a composer\, bandleader and of course unique guitarist who plays rhythm\, lead and bass (why he plays a seven-string ax). His new show that celebrates the new album is highly recommended." —Dan Ouellette \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2015-Sep-28]

SUMMARY:The Trotsky screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Trotsky (Jacob Tierney\, Canada 2009\, 114 min.\, Blu-ray). \nLike most high schoolers\, Leon Bronstein (Jay Baruchel) is having an identity crisis. What differentiates Leon\, however\, is that he believes he is the reincarnation of Soviet thinker Leon Trotsky\, predestined to follow the same path as his namesake. When sentenced to public school as punishment for staging a hunger strike in his father's factory\, Leon just sees it as another step toward the fulfillment of his destiny. Director Jacob Tierney cleverly weaves the pillars of the real Trotsky's life with the tribulations of a passionate high schooler by coupling the awkwardness of our formative years with the proletarian struggles of yesteryear. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-28]

SUMMARY:Photo Finish 5K 2015 / The Philanthropy Challenge running race
DESCRIPTION:The fifth annual George Eastman House Photo Finish 5K will take place on Saturday\, October 3\, 2015\, at 8 a.m. With a great course through Rochester's Neighborhood of the Arts\, the run/walk is open to all—from competitive runners and people using wheelchairs\, to casual joggers\, dedicated walkers\, and entire families. Also called "The Philanthropy Challenge\," the race aims to raise funds for George Eastman House as well as other nonprofit organizations that make Rochester a great place to live and work. The race is unique among Rochester running events in that George Eastman House staff and volunteers manage all of the event organization\, but participants may form teams to raise funds for the charities of their choice. This approach honors both George Eastman's commitment to good health and wellness\, and his enduring philanthropic legacy\, which continues to benefit the entire Rochester community. \n [source: Eastman House calendar\, 2015-Sep-28]
