SUMMARY:What's Up Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Today at 2 p.m. at the MAG\, Amy Gendrou presents a What's Up Lecture titled Gravity and Levity on "works in the MAG collection by Christian Boltanski and Tom Otterness." \nBoltanski's use of ordinary photographs\, lightbulbs and everyday objects elevates his collections of random things to the status of the 'monument\,' evoking themes of loss\, death\, gravity\, sentimentality and memory. In contrast\, Otterness's public sculptures are playful\, inviting and light. They provoke involuntary smiles and often result in games of hide and seek! \n [source: MAG website\, 2015-Jun-1]

SUMMARY:Good-bye\, My Lady screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Good-bye\, My Lady (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1956\, 94 min.\, 16mm) today. \n"Good-bye\, My Lady is a good name for a film that has almost no women in it. This Lady is a Basenji dog (sometimes said to be able to 'laugh and cry\, but not bark')\, one of the most memorable canine performers in the history of film. The title relates to the touching and real relationship between the young orphan boy and the dog\, as well described by a contemporary reviewer in 1956 in the Monthly Film Bulletin: 'the opening scene\, when the boy stands outside the shack waiting for the one important cry among all the night sounds in the woods\, effectively establishes the mood; and the mutual affection that develops between the boy and his dog is made very real.' This is the point. It's the kind of relationship that most films miss or fake; here everything is concrete\, emotions as well as the vision of nature\, the swamp\, the forest. The film\, one of the finest in Wellman's oeuvre and the kind of pastoral masterpiece that every great American director was due to sign at some time or other\, is about an old man and a boy\, both excellent as played by Walter Brennan (one of the greatest roles of that actor so dear to all of us) and Brandon de Wilde\, in a relationship where both change as human beings. That is the film's beautifully-conveyed leitmotif. It's Americana at the root level\, as basic as the purest Hemingway short stories or moments that Flaherty captured on film." — Peter von Bagh \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-1]

SUMMARY:The Great Man's Lady screening (2015-Jun-8 @ 1 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Great Man's Lady (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1942\, 90 min.\, 35mm). \nThe great man in the title could refer to director William Wellman just as easily as it does to the character played by Joel McCrea in this fourth pairing of the director with Barbara Stanwyck\, his favorite actress. Stanwyck plays a young Philadelphia woman who elopes with McCrea\, a man with big ideas of settling a new town in the west. She has just the right pioneering spirit to leave her old life behind\, follow him to the frontier\, and steadfastly support him as he rises to become a great man in politics\, even after an unexpected tragedy causes their paths to diverge. Hollywood makeup magician Wally Westmore transformed 34-year-old Stanwyck into a woman of 100\, using foam rubber to form wrinkles on her face and toilet paper and spirit gum on her hands to resemble loose aged skin. Westmore also helped in making her feel old\, first by taking her to the Masonic Old Ladies' Home in Santa Monica for inspiration in how an elderly woman walks\, sits\, and holds her body\, and by designing a harness for her to wear underneath her clothes to keep her from moving freely\, all to great and natural effect in the film. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-1]

SUMMARY:Story of G.I. Joe screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Story of G.I. Joe (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1945\, 108 min.\, 35mm) tonight. Based on the reports of a Pulitzer Prize—winning war correspondent Ernie Pyle\, who joined a U.S. infantry unit (Company C\, 18th Infantry) on its way across North Africa and Italy\, this remarkably unglamorous and authentic picture\, preceding Samuel Fuller's The Big Red One by 35 years\, refuses to view the Second World War from any other perspective but that of an ordinary grunt\, conveying an extraordinary sense of terror and misery on the battlefield. A tribute to the American infantryman\, and a template for William Wellman's WWII masterpiece Battleground. Pay attention to young Robert Mitchum in the role that launched him to international stardom. [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-1]

SUMMARY:Mary Gauthier
DESCRIPTION:Mary Gauthier performs at the Bop Shop starting around 8:30 p.m. tonight. \nMary Gauthier was born in New Orleans\, Louisiana. Born to a mother she never knew and left in St Vincent's Women and Infants Asylum\, Gauthier was adopted when she was a year old by an Italian Catholic couple from Thibodaux\, Louisiana.[1] At age 15\, she ran away from home\, and spent the next several years in drug rehabilitation\, halfway houses\, and living with friends; she spent her 18th birthday in a jail cell.[2] Struggling to deal with being adopted\, she used drugs and alcohol.[2] These experiences provided fodder for her songwriting later on. Spurred on by friends\, she enrolled at Louisiana State University as a philosophy major\, dropping out during her senior year. After attending the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts\, she opened a Cajun restaurant in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood\, Dixie Kitchen (also the title of her first album).[3]Mary ran\, and cooked at\, the restaurant for eleven years. She was arrested for drunk driving opening night\, July 12\, 1990\, and has been sober ever since. After achieving sobriety\, she was driven to dedicate herself full-time to songwriting\, and embarked upon a career in music. She wrote her first song at age 35.[4] \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2015-Jun-1]

SUMMARY:Mutter Küsters' Fahrt zum Himmel (Mother Küsters Goes to Heaven) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Mutter Küsters' Fahrt zum Himmel (Mother Küsters Goes to Heaven\, R. W. Fassbinder\, West Germany 1975\, 108 min.\, 35mm\, German w/subtitles). \nWhen mass layoffs are announced\, a worker first shoots his superior and then himself. His utterly helpless wife\, Mother Küsters (Brigitte Mira)\, faces a catastrophe. Her son (Armin Meier) and his wife (Irm Hermann) do not want to be publicly associated with the "factory killer." Mother Küsters's daughter Corinna (Ingrid Caven)\, singer in a nightclub\, uses the unexpected publicity to advance her career. A reporter (Gottfried John) writes a denunciatory article. The only people who support Mother Küsters are communists Karl (Karlheinz Böhm) and his wife Marianne (Margit Carstensen). Mother Küsters feels that they take her seriously\, but her hopes that her husband might be publicly rehabilitated are in vain. She turns to an "anarchist" (Matthias Fuchs) for help. An almost impossibly touching portrayal of a working-class woman entangled in web of unwanted media attention and politics. Fassbinder reluctantly shot a special\, more "optimistic" ending for American audiences\, but later fell in love with it\, claiming it to be far more poignant and effective. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-8]
