SUMMARY:Racial Equity Learning Series: Re-framing the Written and Unwritten Rules of History\, Policy\, and Law—Part D-E
DESCRIPTION:The UofR will host a Racial Equity Learning Series lecture titled Re-framing the Written and Unwritten Rules of History\, Policy\, and Law—Part D-E with Yvette Conyers\, and Rebecca Tucker in Helen Wood Hall's Craytor and McNerney Classroom 1W-509. \nBelief systems\, which inform policy and law\, can contribute to and perpetuate injustice. This injustice rests on unconscious and conscious beliefs about who matters in society and who does not. In order to make right what is inherently wrong\, collective action is required. This learning module is based on the work of the Applied Research Center\, a thirty-year-old racial justice think tank that uses media\, research and activism to promote solutions. This module provides examples of how injustice is perpetuated through the media and court systems. By working with art\, film clips and other activities participants will learn the importance of framing an issue with a racial equity lens and practice it. \n [source: Racial Equity Learning Series website\, 2018-Nov-13]

SUMMARY:The Racket screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Racket (Lewis Milestone\, U.S. 1928\, 84 min.\, DCP) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nCaptain James "Mac" McQuigg is a straitlaced police officer keeping the peace on the streets of New York during Prohibition. Nick Scarsi is a major mob boss and bootlegger with a casual attitude toward violence and quick trigger finger. Mac arrests Scarsi and his men multiple times\, but he can never get the charges to stick because the politicians are in the pocket of the gangsters. Still\, Mac becomes enough of a nuisance that Nick gets him transferred to a district in "the sticks\," where he can't do any more harm. But when Nick's little brother gets into a hit-and-run accident in Mac's precinct\, conflict can't be avoided. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Nov-19]

SUMMARY:The House That Jack Built screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The House That Jack Built (Lars von Trier\, Denmark / France / Germany / Sweden 2018\, 155 min.) \nUSA in the 1970s. We follow Jack (Matt Dillon) through five incidents and are introduced to the murders that define Jack's development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack's point of view. He views each murder as an artwork in itself\, even though his dysfunction gives him problems in the outside world. Despite the fact that the final and inevitable police intervention is drawing ever near (which both provokes and puts pressure on Jack) he is — contrary to all logic — set on taking greater and greater chances. The goal is the ultimate artwork: A collection of all his killings manifested in a House that he builds. Along the way we experience Jack's descriptions of his personal condition\, problems and thoughts through a recurring conversation with the unknown Verge — a grotesque mixture of sophistry mixed with an almost childlike self-pity and in-depth explanations of\, for Jack\, dangerous and difficult manoeuvres. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2018-Nov-21]

SUMMARY:Emergency Ward\, The Young Fighter\, Dancing James Berry screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Emergency Ward (Fons Iannelli\, Leo Hurwitz\, U.S. 1952\, 16 min.\, 16mm)\, The Young Fighter\, (Leo Hurwitz\, U.S. 1953\, 29 min.\, 16mm)\, and Dancing James Berry\, (Leo Hurwitz\, U.S. 1954\, 17 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Leo Hurwitz series. \nLife magazine photographer Fons Iannelli developed a prototype portable\, sync-sound film camera and recorder to make documentaries that would have the same kind of immediacy as the best photojournalism. He collaborated with Leo Hurwitz in filming Emergency Ward in Manhattan's St. Vincent Hospital to create what would be the antecedent of the direct cinema (or cinema verité) movement of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The film was shown to Omnibus TV producer Robert Saudek\, who hired Hurwitz (using Iannelli as his front) to make three films for the series\, of which The Young Fighter was the first. Considered the first cinema verité film\, it depicts the life of an aspiring boxer trying to balance his responsibilities to his family and his sport. Dancer James Berry (1915—1969) was part of a vaudeville act with his brothers and the subject of the first (and best known) of several films Hurwitz directed about dance. Dancing James Berry played in cinematheques\, museums\, and universities around the world to rave reviews. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Nov-19]

SUMMARY:Jeffrey Lewis and Los Bolts\, Seth Faergolzia\, The Sugargliders musical performances
DESCRIPTION:Jeffrey Lewis and Los Bolts is the latest incarnation of cult indie-rocker/songwriter Jeffrey Lewis. Called "bizarre but brilliant" by Uncut and "weird but also downright inspiring" by Rolling Stone\, Jeffrey began recording homemade cassettes at home in New York City in 1998. In 2001 he was spotted by Rough Trade Records (label of the Smiths\, the Strokes\, Belle and Sebastian\, etc.) who have since released seven Jeffrey Lewis albums\, alongside Jeffrey's self-releases and side-projects (on labels like Don Giovanni and K Records). Lewis and his bandmates have toured regularly for years\, performing an idiosyncratic blend of garage rock and contemplative folk\, developing a devoted following from Los Angeles to London\, Melbourne to Moscow\, Chicago to Shanghai and beyond\, a career that has also sometimes included sharing bills and tours with The Vaselines\, The Fall\, Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks\, Roky Erickson\, The Mountain Goats\, Daniel Johnston\, Pulp and other luminaries. Jeffrey is also a comic book writer/artist and includes his own illustrations and projections in concert to accompany certain songs (like "The History of Communism" or "The Creeping Brain"). Jeffrey Lewis and Los Bolts currently features Mem (Cat Tatt\, Fem Doms) Pahl on bass and Brent (Dufus\, Moldy Peaches) Cole on drums. Jeffrey has self-published twelve issues of his comic book series Fuff\, and Jeffrey's writing\, illustrations\, comic books and music have been featured by NPR\, The History Channel\, The New York Times and other media outlets great and small. \n [source: Facebook\, 2018-Nov-19]

SUMMARY:Privilege: Part I: Taking out the Sting\, Taking in the Reality\, Part II: Facing it\, Framing It\, Flipping It
DESCRIPTION:Privilege and entitlement are trigger words\, especially for white people on matters of race. Privilege may be invisible to the privileged; it is never invisible to those without it. This workshop explores how privilege shapes our sense of self and our interactions with others. Part II: Facing it\, Framing It\, Flipping It: Once we understand how privilege shapes our lives in multiple ways\, we can become allies with individuals and groups targeted by racism. The success of our community is a shared responsibility. We have more power than we realize to make that happen. \n [source: Rochester Pachamama Alliance e-mail\, 2018-Oct-1]

SUMMARY:Non c'è più religione (Messy Christmas) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Non c'è più religione (Messy Christmas\, Luca Miniero\, Italy 2016\, 94 min.) as part of the Italian Film Series. \nFrom the director of Welcome to the South and Welcome to the North\, comes the hilarious new comedy Messy Christmas. Set on the small island of Porto Buio\, the traditional live Christmas Nativity scene might not go ahead because the baby who's always played Jesus has grown up and no new babies have been born on the island in years! With this fundamental tradition on the line\, newly elected Mayor Cecco (Claudio Bisio\, What a Beautiful Surprise) wants to ask the local Tunisian community to "borrow" one of their children\, but there's conflict between the two communities. Cecco enlists the help of local Islam convert Bilal (Alessandro Gassman\, God Willing) to cross the cultural divide… but both communities are not sure what to make of a baby Jesus that may need his nationality\, and even his religion changed! In order to overcome their differences\, the two communities prepare a nativity scene unlike any you've seen before in this entertaining boxoffice hit. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2018-Nov-21]

SUMMARY:The Great Museum screening
DESCRIPTION:(Rescheduled from November 15) Main Street Arts will host a screening of The Great Museum (Johannes Holzhausen\, Austria 2014\, 94 min.) \nThe film offers glimpses of the day-to-day routine at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna\, and focuses primarily on micro-dramas featuring museum employees. "The Great Museum" also addresses more profound issues: Is it possible to reconcile the conservation of the objects with an up-to-date presentation? What part does art play in the representation of national identity in politics and tourism? \n [source: Facebook\, 2018-Nov-13]

SUMMARY:The Lottery Bride screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Lottery Bride (Paul L. Stine\, U.S. 1930\, 80 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Jeanette MacDonald series. \nOne of the strangest musicals put to film\, The Lottery Bride finds MacDonald starring as a young Norwegian\, Jennie\, who is romantically involved with Chris\, but feels she must enter a dance marathon with her brother\, Nels\, to help him pay off his gambling debts and avoid jail time. After three and a half days\, the police catch up with Nels\, who runs off\, and Jennie is jailed for aiding and abetting. Chris misunderstands the situation and retreats to a remote mining camp with his brother. Distraught\, Jennie is released from jail and offers herself as a "lottery bride"—whoever wins her ticket\, wins Jennie. In a demonstration of fate in action\, Chris chooses Jennie's ticket\, but gives it to his brother instead. The situation continues to get stranger with Italian romantic rivals\, dirigibles\, and sled dogs. Joe E. Brown and Zasu Pitts would steal the show as a bandleader and a saloonkeeper\, if not for the over-the-top ending shot in two-strip Technicolor. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Nov-26]
