SUMMARY:Kahil El'zabar's Allstar Ritual Trio musical performance
DESCRIPTION:For over 15 years\, Bop Shop Records has had a happy and productive relationship with Aacm master percussionist Kahil El'zabar. Going back to 2000 when he first brought his main band\, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble\, to the atrium at Village Gate\, he has graced us with several versions of his various ensembles. Earlier in 2016\, we presented an edition of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble featuring trombonist Craig Harris and baritone saxophonist Hamiet Blueitt. Back in 2001\, we presented the duo of El'zabar and violinist Billy Bang. But perhaps our most well-attended concert was a duet set with saxophonist David Murray in 2000. And we are proud that it resulted in the album We Is: Live At The Bop Shop\, released on Delmark Records to great acclaim. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2016-Nov-28]

SUMMARY:The Godless Girl screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Godless Girl (Cecil B. Demille\, U.S. 1929\, 118 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nA high-voltage melodrama of wild youth and institutional abuse based on real events: Judy\, mouthpiece for the Godless Society\, a group of teenage atheists\, locks horns with Bob\, class president and ardent defender of the Christian faith\, and tragedy strikes. Both are sentenced to time in a notorious reform school\, where a sadistic guard known only as "The Brute" awaits. The Godless Girl is part topical\, part hysterical\, part spectacle—and pure Cecil B. Demille. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Nov-28]

SUMMARY:Kikujirô no natsu (Kikujiro) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Kikujirô no natsu (Kikujiro\, Takeshi Kitano\, Japan 1999\, 121 min.\, 35mm\, Japanese w/subtitles) as part of the Takeshi Kitano series. \nNine-year-old Masao and veteran gangster Kikujiro (Kitano)\, a friend of Masao's grandmother\, travel across Japan to find Masao's mother\, becoming fast friends and crashing into increasingly surreal adventures along the way. After a series of violent gangster thrillers\, Kitano surprised his fans with this mixture of drama and slapstick\, revealing a tender side to his stereotypical hard-boiled and stone-faced professional with a gun. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Nov-28]

SUMMARY:Bilder der Welt und Inschrift des Krieges (Images of the World and the Inscription of War) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Bilder der Welt und Inschrift des Krieges (Images of the World and the Inscription of War\, Harun Farocki\, West Germany 1989\, 75 min.\, digital file\, German w/subtitles) as part of the (In)visibility series. \nThe late German filmmaker and theorist Harun Farocki observed in 1992: "Since its invention\, film has seemed destined to make history visible." Images of the World and the Inscription of War seems to reply: what if we don't see what film makes visible\, until it is already history? In this examination of technology and morality\, Farocki probes the American military's failure (or was it refusal?) to recognize and act upon evidence of Auschwitz's existence\, as revealed in 1944 reconnaissance images. From this inquiry stems an unsettling and free-associative cinematic essay on hidden identities\, camouflage\, decoys\, and masks—unfolding\, in Farocki's trademark style\, through an assemblage of multiple visual media. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Dec-5]

SUMMARY:Jimkata musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Childhood friends Evan Friedell\, Aaron Gorsch and Packy Lunn come together as the four piece synth-pop powerhouse known as Jimkata. Smashing together arena sized rock energy and highly tattoo-able lyrics this band can be perfectly described as huge. Lead singer and lyricist Friedell has been likened to a modern day Peter Gabriel with his emphatic\, energetic performances of his vulnerable\, relatable and powerful lyrics. A tasteful blend of fiery guitars\, analog synthesizers and pop catchiness\, Jimkata's main charm is their ability to have you singing along by the second verse while kicking out a hard hitting rock show. To describe the sound\, it's as if David Byrne was arm wrestling with TV on the Radio backstage at a Rush concert. \n [source: Up All Night website\, 2016-Dec-5]

SUMMARY:Children of Men screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Children of Men (Alfonso Cuarón\, U.S./U.K. 2006\, 109 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Primal Screen series. \nWith an almost prophetic look at the refugee crisis in Europe and the United Kingdom's retreat into Brexit-style isolationism\, Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón (Y tu mama también\, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) turned P. D. James's 1992 dystopian novel into his sixth and most politically charged film\, a breathtaking hybrid of fantasy\, action thriller\, and allegorical tale. The story is set in a world without children\, mired in religious violence\, authoritarianism\, and despair (as denounced by Michael Caine in a memorable scene). This is also a cinematic tour de force of the highest order\, an ideal prologue to the weightless camera sequences in the award-winning Gravity (2013)\, Cuarón's latest film. Watch out for the long climactic sequence where birth and death collide in an endless single shot with a handheld camera\, an inspired masterpiece of poetry and technology from the film's director of photography\, Emmanuel Lubezki. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Dec-5]
