SUMMARY:Driving With Selvi screening
DESCRIPTION:The UofR Film and Media Studies group will screen Driving With Selvi (Elisa Paloschi\, Canada 2015\, 74 min.) in Dewey 1-101 on the UofR Campus. \nSelvi\, like so many girls living within India's patriarchal culture\, is forced to marry at a young age\, only to find herself in a violent and abusive marriage. One day in deep despair\, she chooses to escape\, going to a highway with the intention of throwing herself under the wheels of a bus. Instead she gets on the bus\, choosing to live… and goes on to become South India's first female taxi driver. Over a ten-year journey\, we see a remarkable transformation as Selvi finds her voice and defies all expectations — learning to drive\, starting her own taxi company\, leading seminars to educate other women\, and much more. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-Jan-25]

SUMMARY:Cléo de 5 à 7 (Cléo from 5 to 7) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Cléo de 5 à 7 (Cléo from 5 to 7\, Agnès Varda\, France 1962\, 90 min.\, 35mm\, French w/subtitles). \nThe film depicts two crucial hours in the life of Cléo (Corinne Marchand)\, a pop star waiting for the results of a biopsy. In a moment of crisis\, she breaks with gender roles and social expectations; she chooses to wander through Paris and seek solace from the individuals she encounters\, including a soldier on leave from the Algerian War (Antoine Bourseiller). The film\, praised for its beauty and vivid representation of 1960s Paris\, is major work of the French New Wave. The film features a score by Michel Legrand\, and cameos by Legrand\, Jean-Luc Godard\, and Anna Karina. Cléo was selected for the 1962 Cannes Film Festival and presented again fifty years later in "Cannes Classics\," attesting to the film's continued vibrancy\, popularity\, and legacy. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-25]

SUMMARY:Blazing Saddles screening (2016-Jan-31 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Cinemark Tinseltown USA will screen Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks\, U.S. 1974\, 93 min.) \nIn this satirical take on Westerns\, crafty railroad worker Bart (Cleavon Little) becomes the first black sheriff of Rock Ridge\, a frontier town about to be destroyed in order to make way for a new railroad. Initially\, the people of Rock Ridge harbor a racial bias toward their new leader. However\, they warm to him after realizing that Bart and his perpetually drunk gunfighter friend (Gene Wilder) are the only defense against a wave of thugs sent to rid the town of its population. \n [source: Cinemark Tinseltown USA calendar\, 2016-Jan-25]

SUMMARY:Confessions Of A Nightingale theatrical performance (2016-Jan-31 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:He was one of the great twentieth century American playwrights\, and Tennessee Williams' private persona is shown to have been just as fascinating as his plays in this delightful\, moving\, and incisive ninety minute drama. The play is structured as an interview with a reporter\, to whose unheard questions Williams responds directly to the audience as if they are doing the asking. We learn of the struggles of his early years\, his first successes\, the price of his fame and his later years of dissolution and decline\, all in Williams' delightfully witty style. Part of the Rainbow Theater Festival. \n [source: Bread and Water Theatre website\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:Navajo Resistance to Forced Relocation: A Report Back from Black Mesa\, Arizona
DESCRIPTION:This month's Monday Mayhem discussion is titled Navajo Resistance to Forced Relocation: A Report Back from Black Mesa\, Arizona. \nIn 1974\, Congress redrew the lines of the Hopi and Navajo Reservations in Arizona and overnight 10\,000 Navajo and 300 Hopis were on the wrong side of the line and slated for forced relocation in order to make way massive coal strip-mining. For over 40 years Navajo families have been resisting relocation in the Black Mesa/Big Mountain region. As part of a Black Mesa Indigenous Support program\, local land and housing justice organizer Ryan Acuff from Take Back the Land Rochester provided direct-on land support in December 2015/January 2016. Ryan will share their experiences with the struggle of the largest indigenous struggle against relocation in the U.S. and how we can learn from and support it. \n [source: Rochester Indymedia website\, 2016-Jan-25]

SUMMARY:Tintype Photo Collection on display
DESCRIPTION:Starting today at the Yates County History Center is a display of their Tintype Photo Collection. \nYates County History Center invites the public to enjoy a display of its tin type photo collection beginning Tuesday\, February 2 inside the Oliver House Museum. The collection of almost 100 portraits illustrates the affection between siblings\, parent and child\, and husband and wife with a delightful assortment of studio props. The photographic process used to create a tin type was cheap\, easy and quick. The process created a direct positive on the thin metal sheet coated with dark lacquer or enamel. Popular during the Civil War\, they were easily carried in soldier's pocket. Studio portraits such as those in the YCHC exhibit were initially the most predominant. Eventually\, due to the ease of development\, many photographers hit the road and shot images at county fairs and other public events. Also on display will be a large assortment of cameras and image viewing artifacts from the collections. \n [source: Yates County History Center calendar\, 2016-Feb-1]

SUMMARY:The Chinatown Mystery: Episodes 8–10 screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Chinatown Mystery: Episodes 8–10 (J. P. McGowan\, U.S. 1928\, 65 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nThis winter the Dryden will be screening the newly restored thrill busting silent serial The Chinatown Mystery\, starring legendary strongman and circus acrobat Joe Bonomo. Written by and co-starring Francis Ford (John Ford's older brother\, who had introduced John to filmmaking)\, this serial is filled with daring stunts\, death-defying situations\, and a rather offbeat sense of humor in the form of deceptively placid heroine Ruth Hiatt\, who had previously starred in numerous silent comedies. If you're looking for searing drama that shows life's grim realities\, we suggest driving in a Rochester blizzard; if you're looking for wide-eyed melodrama\, people being hurled every which way\, deep-dyed villainy\, and satisfying explosions\, join us for this exciting excursion into fiendish fun. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-25]

SUMMARY:Fong juk (Exiled) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Fong juk (Exiled\, Johnnie To\, Hong Kong 2006\, 110 min.\, 35mm\, Cantonese w/subtitles). \nThe time is 1998. The setting is Macau. Every living soul jumps at every chance to make quick money before the Portuguese colony ushers in a new era under the Chinese rule. Against this background of fin-de-siècle malaise come two hit men from Hong Kong sent to take out a renegade member trying to turn over a new leaf with his wife and newborn baby. They soon find themselves in the throes of a dilemma when two of their former associates also show up\, intent on thwarting them at every cost. For the jaded hit men\, they wonder where this journey will end. "To's shoot-outs are masterful displays of composition and choreography\, often unfolding in cramped apartments\, open-air stairwells and courtyards. The final confrontation is a slow-motion\, De Palma-esque massacre in a hotel lobby that begins and ends in the amount of time it takes for a high-flying can of Red Bull to hit the floor. Breathtaking." — Ken Fox (Tv Guide) \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-25]
