SUMMARY:Western Centuries musical performance
DESCRIPTION:When did country music start to sound the same? The first generation of country artists borrowed from everything around them: Appalachian string band music\, Texas fiddle traditions\, cowboy songs\, Delta blues. In an era of unprecedented access to our musical pasts\, shouldn't country music be even more diverse than it was in its infancy? Honky-tonk super-group Western Centuries\, back with a new album in 2018\, surely understands this. They aren't bound by any dictum to write songs in a modern country\, or even a retro country style; instead they're taking their own personal influences as three very different songwriters and fusing it into a sound that moves beyond the constraints of country. Part of the reason they can make music with this range of influences is because of their roots in city life. Both Cahalen Morrison and Ethan Lawton\, two of the three principal songwriters\, live in Seattle's diverse South end\, and the third songwriter\, Jim Miller\, spends most of his time in and around New York City. The urban landscape is rarely mentioned in country music\, but it makes for a refreshing sound that draws as easily from modern R&B as it does George Jones. It helps too that the album was recorded and co-produced by acclaimed musician and Grammy-winning producer Joel Savoy in Eunice\, Louisiana\, where local Cajun and Creole artists have always been adept at marrying old country sounds with R&B and rock 'n' roll. \n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2018-May-21]

SUMMARY:B's Bees musical performance (2018-May-24 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:B's Bees is excited to announce the release of not one\, but two albums in early 2018. Their first 2018\, a tribute to the great Charlie Haden\, and aptly titled "Dear Charlie"\, has been selling strongly since it's Jan. 2018 release\, and reached #4 on itunes Canada's Jazz Charts. The album contains compositions from the various eras of Charlie Haden's illustrious career\, and includes several selections from his Liberation Music Orchestra repertoire\, arranged in a new and exciting way. Their second 2018 release\, titled "Kanata" is set to be released on April 20. The album contains a suite written by bandleader Brandon Goodwin titled Kanata Suite\, and is an ode to his home country of Canada. This U.S. tour will be their second foray into the country\, the first taking them from Montreal\, to New Orleans\, to work with producer Delfeayo Marsalis\, before heading back to Montreal to record their two new records. For their performances on this tour the group will be performing a mixture of music from both of their new albums. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-May-21]

SUMMARY:The Plastic Dome of Norma Jean screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Plastic Dome of Norma Jean (Juleen Compton\, U.S. 1966\, 82 min.\, 35mm) as part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation Tour series. \nCompton's second independent film is the story of a clairvoyant teenage girl\, Norma Jean\, taken advantage of by a boy band fashioned after the Beatles\, determined to exploit the young woman's powers as part of a hoax revival. Filmed in the Ozarks with a cast of young\, unknown actors\, the picture suggests a tender tale about a pair of young companions. However\, the movie quickly takes an unusual turn when Norma Jean and her friend Vance pick up an enormous plastic dome they've ordered. Stylistically accomplished\, the movie is an impressive example of American independent feature filmmaking during the mid-1960s and an uncommon portrayal\, for the time\, of female agency. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-21]

SUMMARY:Diva screening; Kearstin Piper Brown musical performance
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Diva (Jean-Jacques Beineix\, France 1981\, 117 min.) at 7:30 p.m. preceded by a musical performance by soprano Kearstin Piper Brown for their Diva Festiva: A Fundraising Event For The Little. \nThe fundraising evening includes a rare 35mm screening of 1982's Diva. The classic film has a special bond with The Little — it was one of the longest running films in the theater's history. Despite this epic run\, screenings of Diva are rare today\, and that's why we're thrilled to begin theater 1's historic restoration with this intelligent\, brilliant\, and memorable movie. \nTwo tapes\, two Parisian mob killers\, one corrupt policeman\, an opera fan\, a teenage thief\, and the coolest philosopher ever filmed. All these characters twist their way through an intricate and stylish French language thriller. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-May-10]

SUMMARY:The Lost Moment screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Lost Moment (Martin Gabel\, U.S. 1947\, 89 min.\, 35mm) as part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation Tour series. \nIt's ironic that the film version of The Aspern Papers by the 19th-century American author Henry James\, revered for his naturalism\, should be the zenith of Hollywood gothic. In James's story\, a nameless American scoundrel bent on a publishing coup tracks the centenarian Juliana Bordereau to a decaying Venetian palazzo. In The Lost Moment\, the scoundrel is an unscrupulous New York publisher (Robert Cummings)\, who plots to acquire Jeffrey Ashton's love letters to his withered muse (Agnes Moorehead) even if it requires wooing the tedious great-niece\, Miss Tina (Susan Hayward). \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-14]

SUMMARY:Stranded screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Stranded (Juleen Compton\, U.S. 1965\, 90 min.\, 35mm) as part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation Tour series. \nJuleen Compton was an independent American filmmaker and one of the only women making features during the 1960s. Stranded\, her first movie\, tells the story Raina\, a young American woman (played by Compton)\, traveling through Greece with her American lover\, and her French\, gay\, best friend. Raina partakes in several love affairs\, rejecting marriage offers for no other reason than she likes her life the way it is. Made just prior to the arrival of second wave feminism\, Compton's film never judges the writer/director's on-screen alter ego the way similar female characters were frequently punished in other films during this era by stigmatizing female sexuality. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-14]

SUMMARY:Deej screening
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will host a screening of Deej (Robert Rooy\, David James Savarese\, U.S. 2017\, 72 min.) as part of the Reel Mind Film Series. \nAbandoned by his birth parents and unable to speak for himself\, DJ Savarese ("Deej") found not only a loving family but also a life in words\, which he types on a text-to-voice synthesizer. As he makes his way through high school and dreams of college\, he confronts the terrors of his past\, obstacles to inclusion\, and the sometimes paralyzing beauty of his own senses. In his advocacy on behalf of other nonspeaking autistics\, he embraces filmmaking and poetry\, and discovers what having a voice can truly mean. Through the first-of-its-kind collaboration between veteran filmmaker Robert Rooy and a nonspeaking young man with Autism\, the film is a story told largely from the inside — by DJ\, and not by his parents or autism experts or even the camera. At its core\, Deej reflects the level of participation that disability rights advocates insist upon: "Nothing about us without us." \n [source: Reel Mind Theatre and Film Series website\, 2018-May-7]

DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Carousel (Henry King\, U.S. 1956\, 124 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Eastman Entertains series. \nOne year after the success of Fred Zinnemann's Oklahoma!\, Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones were reunited for another musical\, Carousel\, adapted once again from Rodgers and Hammerstein. Carousel tells the story of Billy\, dead for fifteen years and living "above." He wishes to have permission to go down to Earth for one day\, to make amends for past mistakes. SUMMARY:The Great Gatsby screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Great Gatsby (Baz Luhrmann\, U.S. 2013\, 142 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Eastman Entertains series. \nMysterious Jay Gatsby (Leonardo Dicaprio)\, a nouveau riche established in Long Island in the roaring 1920s\, is seen through the eyes of his modest neighbor\, Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire). When Nick receives a personal invitation to one of Gatsby's magnificent parties\, he soon finds out that Gatsby is actually quite intrigued by one of his relatives\, his charming married cousin Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). This newest adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous 1925 novel clearly reflects Luhrmann's cinematic style: colorful\, eccentric\, and musical. Also worth noting is the all-star soundtrack featuring artists such as Jay-Z\, Beyoncé\, and Lana Del Rey\, whether loudly accompanying the splendid festivities in Gatsby's mansion or conveying the character's feelings. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-14]
