SUMMARY:The Spy in Black screening (2016-Mar-10 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Spy in Black (Michael Powell\, U.K. 1939\, 77 min.\, 35mm). \nIn this tense thriller set in World War I\, Captain Hardt (Conrad Veidt) is ordered to take his U-boat to Northern Scotland\, where he must contact a fellow conspirator and sink the British fleet. The contact\, however\, turns out to be a beautiful schoolteacher (Valerie Hobson) who acts as a go-between with the British Navy traitor\, Lieutenant Ashington (Sebastian Shaw). The jealousy between the two men over the young woman leads to their plans falling apart\, with one of them being left to complete the mission alone. The Spy in Black represents the first collaboration between director Michael Powell and writer Emeric Pressburger\, a creative duo behind such masterpieces as The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Mar-7]

SUMMARY:Ameri/Cain Gothic A Mystery in Two Acts theatrical performance (2016-Mar-10 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC is hosting a performance of Ameri/Cain Gothic A Mystery in Two Acts by Paul Carter Harrison. \nOn the eve of the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, an unlikely pair finds themselves navigating the present through their unreconciled violent and sexualized "ghosts" of the past. For mature audiences\, this gothic tale breaches the haunting of America's past with the complicity of its present. Enter I.W. Harper\, a private investigator\, in town to provide security detail for a civil rights leader in Memphis on what would later be the eve of his assassination. In an act of reconnoitering\, he crosses paths in a rooming house with Cass Pruitt\, a reclusive woman "haunted" by her past lovers and sexual assaults. In this multi-layered piece\, Paul Carter Harrison cooks up a gothic gumbo\, adding one morsel after another\, all the while allowing the meal to heat until it reaches the boiling point of analysis and critique … does America have a predilection to violence and sexual assault … were the people who loved King the most too distracted to protect him… \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-Feb-29]

SUMMARY:Pasqualino Settebellezze (Seven Beauties) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Pasqualino Settebellezze (Seven Beauties\, Lina Wertmüller\, Italy 1975\, 111 min.\, 35mm\, Italian w/subtitles). \nGiancarlo Giannini received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a Neapolitan lothario trying to support his seven ugly sisters and save his own skin during the dark days of World War II. The results of his attempts are some of the most comic and grotesque moments in Italian cinema. Lina Wertmüller was one of the controversial directors of the 1970s; this film\, a surreal mixture of sex\, humor\, and violence\, marked the apex of her international fame. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Feb-29]

SUMMARY:The Heat Is On: The Effects of Modern Climate Change on Mountains lecture by Benjamin Laabs
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Laabs will present a lecture titled The Heat Is On: The Effects of Modern Climate Change on Mountains in Eisenhart Auditorium at the Rochester Museum and Science Center for the Monthly Meeting of the Adirondack Mountain Club – Genesee Valley Chapter. \nAs a geologist\, SUNY Geneseo Professor Ben Laabs studies the geologic record of mountain snow and ice with the goal of reconstructing changes in hydro climate over a variety of timescales. His research\, chiefly in the Rocky Mountains and most recently in the Sangre de Christo Range in southern Colorado in June 2014\, has helped to identify the impacts of changing snow and ice on mountain environments since the last ice age ended 18\,000 years ago. His work helps to link changes in the long and short-term shifts in annual snow and ice cover in mountain watersheds to climate change. In his first presentation to the Adirondack Mountain Club\, Professor Laabs will share some key findings from studies of declining snow and ice in Glacier National Park\, where the effects of ice on landscape evolution and alpine habitat are especially clear. Here\, most of the iconic glaciers that popularized the park in the early 1900s have vanished\, and even the largest that remain are projected to disappear within decades. \n [source: Adirondack Mountain Club of Genesee Valley website\, 2016-Feb-29]

SUMMARY:Workshop: Which Way Should I Go? Using A Compass — Part 3
DESCRIPTION:This month's workshop is part 3 of a 3-part-workshop focusing on how to use a compass. Last month Barb Brenner presented how to use true north on a topo map to take and use a bearing. At our January workshop Barb presented how to use magnetic north to take and use a bearing. This month learn how to use a bearing taken with either magnetic north or true north and use it with the other "north". This workshop focuses on declination\, the angle between magnetic north and true north\, and how to adjust for it. Bring your compass to the workshop. \n [source: Adirondack Mountain Club of Genesee Valley website\, 2016-Feb-29]

SUMMARY:Broadway Love screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Broadway Love (Ida May Park\, U.S. 1918\, 66 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nThe American film industry had a number of women directors active before the First World War\, and perhaps surprisingly\, most of them eventually worked for the most prolific of all American film studios\, Universal. One of the most determined figures at Universal City\, Ida May Park directed 14 features and wrote 48 screenplays for them between 1917 and 1920. She both wrote and directed this racy country-to-footlights tale for four of Universal's then-biggest stars: Juanita Hansen\, adventurous Dorothy Phillips\, chisel-featured William Stowell\, and the rapidly rising Lon Chaney before he acquired all his thousand faces. It is the Eastman Museum's privilege to honor the International Women's Day by showing this extremely rare and entertaining survivor of Park's output in a recent restoration from our Moving Image Department. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Feb-29]

SUMMARY:Heart of a Dog screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Heart of a Dog (Laurie Anderson\, France / U.S. 2015\, 90 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \n"Cantering on Anderson's beloved rat terrier Lolabelle\, who died in 2011\, Heart Of A Dog is a personal essay that weaves together childhood memories\, video diaries\, philosophical musings on data collection\, surveillance culture and the Buddhist conception of the afterlife\, and heartfelt tributes to the artists\, writers\, musicians and thinkers who inspire her. Fusing her own witty\, inquisitive narration with original violin compositions\, hand-drawn animation\, 8mm home movies and artwork culled from exhibitions past and present\, Anderson creates a hypnotic\, collage-like visual language out of the raw materials of her life and art\, examining how stories are constructed and told — and how we use them to make sense of our lives." SUMMARY:March Monday Mayhem: Repeal 50-a\, the law that hides blue crime
DESCRIPTION:Enough Is Enough is going to present on its developing campaign to repeal NY Civil Rights Law 50-a for the Flying Squirrel's March Monday Mayhem! So what the Heck is NY Civil Rights Law 50-a anyway? New York civil rights law section 50-a provides blanket exclusion from disclosure under the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) for ANY police department documents that could potentially be used to evaluate an officer. So how is 50-a affecting FOIL when it comes to the police department? Since the mid-1990s\, courts in NY have been expanding the use of 50-a in terrifying ways. At this point\, any record that could possibly be used to evaluate the conduct of an officer is now protected from disclosure through FOIL. If citizens complain about an officer or he/she is accused of misconduct\, every complaint made (or even just the number of complaints) against that officer is protected from disclosure. If internal affairs conducts an investigation for misconduct\, corruption\, the use of force\, or anything else for that matter\, every aspect of that report is protected from disclosure even if the names of the people involved are completely removed! If an officer is caught lying\, cheating\, or stealing and has disciplinary charges leveled against him/her\, all of the findings are exempt from disclosure. Basically\, the reasoning is that any police department information that can prove an officer is corrupt can also be used to evaluate that officer's performance\, and is therefore protected from ever being disclosed to the public. It's an incredibly serious issue! \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-Feb-29]

SUMMARY:A Night at the Movies 100 Years Ago\, screenings of American Cooperative Weekly\, Exploits of Elaine - Episode 2\, Domestic Difficulties\, The Cossack Whip (2016-Mar-7 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Night at the Movies 100 Years Ago with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli\, featuring American Cooperative Weekly (U.S. 1917\, 3 min.\, 35mm)\, Exploits of Elaine – Episode 2 (George B. Seitz and Louis Gasnier\, U.S. 1914—15\, 30 min.\, 35mm)\, Domestic Difficulties (H.G. Fisher\, U.S. 1916\, 8 min.\, 35mm)\, and The Cossack Whip (John H. Collins\, U.S. 1916\, 73 min.\, 35mm). \nWe are continuing our series of A Night at the Movies 100 Years Ago with a program from 1916\, featuring a newsreel\, a cartoon starring two popular characters from the newspaper "funnies" of the time\, an exciting episode of the most popular serial of 1916\, and a feature starring Viola Dana as Darya\, a ballerina in prerevolutionary Russia bent on revenge against the sadistic and despicable Czarist police chief who murdered her husband and father. A thrilling and sometimes wonderfully kinky melodrama\, The Cossack Whip is one of the few surviving films of the talented director Collins\, the real-life husband of Dana. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Feb-29]
