SUMMARY:Frisco Jenny screening
DESCRIPTION:At 2 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen Frisco Jenny (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1932\, 73 min.\, 35mm). \nRuth Chatterton suffers her way through this sweeping pre-Code story that spans the early 20th century\, from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake through to the bootlegging Prohibition era. When her fiancé is killed just before their nuptials can "legitimize" the baby she's carrying\, Chatterton turns to prostitution to support her son. She climbs the ranks to become a top procurer of female flesh and illegal alcohol\, before taking the rap for a murder committed by slimy and powerful friend Louis Calhern and losing her son to foster care. And it's even further downhill from there\, culminating with a mother's secret sacrifice for her son. Wellman directs this familiar story reminiscent of Madame X (filmed several times\, and with Chatterton starring in the 1929 version) with his usual frankness\, yet with sympathy toward the pre-Code woman trying to navigate her way through (or escape from) illicit relationships\, blackmail\, and the law. Look for Wellman in a cameo as a reporter. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-18]

SUMMARY:Gods of the Plague screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Götter der Pest (Gods of the Plague\, R. W. Fassbinder\, West Germany 1970\, 91 min.\, 35mm\, German w/subtitles) tonight at 8 p.m. \nFranz (Harry Baer) has been released from jail and is looking for former acquaintances. First he finds Joanna (Hanna Schygulla)\, who sings in a bar. She loves him and wants to help. But Franz senses that behind this love lingers a claim of ownership that would take away the last bit of freedom he has. Franz also does not want to be kept by Joanna. He states: "There must be some money!" He abandons Joanna. Then he meets Margarethe (Margarethe von Trotta). She\, too\, is ready to help and\, more importantly\, less possessive in her love. This is the second part of Fassbinder's highly stylized loose trilogy of gangster pictures\, considered by the filmmaker to be the fifth best picture he ever made. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-18]

SUMMARY:Grace performance (2015-May-23 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Grace is a tragicomedy that explores human assumptions about how God\, goodness\, faith and causality operate in the cosmic machinery. Steve and Sara have relocated to Sunrise\, Florida to pursue an unbelievably wonderful business deal\, but as the deal slowly unravels and Steve finds himself afflicted with an itch that just won't stop\, Sara finds herself increasingly drawn to their next-door neighbor\, Sam\, a badly-scarred victim of a recent car accident who wants nothing to do with her or her Bible-quoting husband. In the end\, with a little help from an old German exterminator who's still angry about the Allied bombing of Hamburg in World War II\, all three characters are confronted by a world that's both better and worse than any religion can justify. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-May-18]

SUMMARY:An Evening with The Rita Collective
DESCRIPTION:The Rita Collective is a new acoustic world jazz quartet. Currently busy arranging a diverse collection of melodies from around the world for it's unusual instrumentation of bass clarinet\, marimba\, acoustic bass\, and altered drum kit\, the group has a sound and feeling rarely found in the Jazz world. The bass clarinet is at times hauntingly lyrical and at other times deeply sinister\, a fascinating compliment to the beautiful woody tones of the marimba. Acoustic bass supports the melodies with a strength and warmth that rounds out the group\, and an altered drum kit reaches beyond the traditional color pallet of drum set to infuse the music with a diverse world beat. Together\, these wooden instruments resonate with a warmth and clarity that connects the listener to the music. \n [source: Bernunzio Uptown Music website\, 2015-May-18]

SUMMARY:Night Nurse screening
DESCRIPTION:At 8 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen Night Nurse (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1931\, 70 min.\, 35mm). \nFresh from nursing school\, idealistic young trainee Barbara Stanwyck has her work cut out for her with her first assignment: caring for two children mysteriously suffering from malnourishment. With their drunken and mostly unconscious mother more interested in partying than in her children's well-being; a menacing\, manipulative chauffeur (an early role for Clark Gable\, without a mustache or dimpled charm); and a shady but helpful bootlegger (played by Ben Lyon) whom Stanwyck meets while patching up his gunshot wound in the emergency ward\, you have all the ingredients for one of the tastiest pre-Code films produced by Warner Bros. A gum-chomping Joan Blondell is delightfully on hand as Stanwyck's nursing school pal who knows the score. This was the first of five films director Wellman made with Stanwyck\, and they loved working together. Wellman was also quick to recognize the talent he saw in Gable and urged Warner Bros. to sign him to a contract. They didn't\, and he soon moved on to MGM where he steadily put his star power to work at the box office for them for the next twenty years. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-18]

SUMMARY:Love Is Colder than Death screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 8 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen Liebe ist kälter als der Tod (Love Is Colder than Death\, R. W. Fassbinder\, West Germany 1969\, 88 min.\, 35mm\, German w/subtitles). \nFassbinder himself plays small-time pimp\, Franz\, in this film that could seem more indebted to the nouvelle vague than to Douglas Sirk or Bertolt Brecht. While ostensibly a gangster film\, Love Is Colder than Death really concerns a complex love triangle\, between Franz\, his prostitute girlfriend\, Joanna (Hanna Schygulla)\, and Bruno (Ulli Lommel)\, the member of a crime syndicate that Franz refuses to join. While Fassbinder's film does have much in common with a French New Wave work such as Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (1959)\, it shares little of the latter's carefree exuberance. Ultimately foregrounded here is a bleak precision and sense of alienation that would go on to characterize Fassbinder's work as a whole. Love Is Colder than Death was Fassbinder's first feature film\, and the first installment in what he loosely conceived as a gangster trilogy\, which the Dryden will screen in its entirety (see also Saturday\, May 23\, and Thursday\, May 28). \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-18]

Tonight\, Gordon Brown will discuss 50 Things that Photoshop Learned from the Darkroom. \nFor people familiar with digital editing programs\, Gordon Brown will describe how digital photo-editing programs such as Photoshop depended upon—and were built upon—the conventional historical techniques used in the darkroom. Using an easy-to-understand Powerpoint slideshow\, Gordon will demonstrate how digital photography techniques evolved from the conventional darkroom techniques. Attendees will also learn how Photoshop improved upon traditional processes and added features that would be difficult\, if not impossible\, to do in the darkroom. \n [source: Facebook\, 2015-May-18]

SUMMARY:The Falls screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Falls (Peter Greenaway\, U.K. 1980\, 185 min.\, 16mm) tonight at 8 p.m. \nPeter Greenaway's first feature-length work\, The Falls introduced film audiences to its director's singular style and wit. The film employs an anthropological tone to tell of the aftermath of a fictional cataclysmic event\, referred to in the film simply as VUE\, or "Violent Unknown Event." In this way\, it juxtaposes the language of facticity with the wildly absurd details of an imagined catastrophe. We are told that this mysterious phenomenon has affected nearly 20 million people\, who share a number of common symptoms: most notably\, the acquisition of completely new languages and a seemingly inexhaustible fascination with birds. Although it might be called a "mock" documentary\, Greenaway employs breathtaking cinematography and an almost obsessive attention to detail to make its doomed characters feel real. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-11]

SUMMARY:Wings screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 8 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen Wings (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1927\, 144 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nWilliam A. Wellman's WWI aviation epic (his first major film) is notable on a number of fronts: it established the "wartime buddies/rivals for girl at home" type of story\, elevated both Richard Arlen and Buddy Rogers to major star status\, won the first Academy Award for Best Picture\, and set a still-impressive standard for aerial photography of flight combat—lent extra authenticity through Wellman's own experiences as a pilot in the French Army's Lafayette Flying Corps. Besides these important achievements\, it has the incomparable Clara Bow in one of her best roles and a brief\, career-establishing walk-on part for Gary Cooper. A passionate\, thrilling\, at times funny\, and ultimately quite moving experience\, Wings is a film that goes into the heavens yet deals poignantly with human emotions on earth as well. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-11]

SUMMARY:Shaun of the Dead screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 6:30 p.m.\, the Littlewill screen Shaun of the Dead (Edgar Wright\, U.K. / France / U.S.\, 2004\, 99 min.)—inexplicably as part of their Science on Screen Series followed by a discussion with virus experts Dr. Luis Martinez-Sobrido\, and Dr. David Topham. \nThere comes a day in every man's life when he has to get off the couch… and kill some zombies. When flesh-eating zombies are on the hunt for a bite to eat\, it's up to slacker Shaun (Simon Pegg) and his best pal (Nick Frost) to save their friends and family from becoming the next entree. Satisfy your bloodthirsty appetite with the movie that masters of horror and film critics alike hailed as the funniest and scariest movie of 2004. Novelist Stephen King gushed\, "It's a 10 on the fun meter and destined to be a cult classic" and Newsweek called Shaun of the Dead "a bloody hoot!" It's a screamingly hilarious zomedy that will have you dying with laughter. \n [source: Little Theatre e-mail\, 2015-May-13]
