SUMMARY:A Sampler of Cinematic Gems from the Museum's Collection
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 8 p.m. at the Dryden\, Paolo Cherchi Usai will present A Sampler of Cinematic Gems from the Museum's Collection. \nThis is the inaugural program of a new series dedicated to the appreciation of George Eastman House's renowned collection of over 28\,000 films\, carefully selected from the world's cinematic legacy. The show begins with the amazing short film that paved the way to the introduction of sound\, [Theodore W. Case Sound Test # 4: Canary] (US 1925\, 2 min.)\, shot in Auburn\, New York. Three-quarters of a century later\, soundscape reaches unprecedented dramatic heights with In Absentia (Stephen and Timothy Quay\, UK 2000\, 20 min.)\, a masterpiece of animation scored by Karlheinz Stockhausen. Its counterpoint is Pass the Gravy (Fred L. Guiol\, US 1928\, 22 min.)\, where the absence of sound is employed to irresistible comedy effect\, courtesy of Philip C. Carli's live piano performance. We then travel to the Southern hemisphere with Kitchen Sink (Alison Maclean\, New Zealand 1989\, 14 min.)\, whose eerie setting and music background would make David Lynch envious. For comic relief\, Gus Visser and His Singing Duck (US 1925\, 3 min.) brings the program to a sweet\, lighthearted closure. And that's only the beginning! \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Apr-20]

SUMMARY:Laurie O'Brien Installation and Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:This evening at 6 p.m. in the Research Center's Project Space at VSW is an Installation and Artist Talk with Laurie O'Brien\, Nancy Bernardo\, Mitch Goldstein\, and Allen Topolski. \nMy project is a series of collages that explore a world that is becoming both increasingly more connected and distant. I respond to this complexity by working with pre-existing images and texts that are subject to extreme stress or dislocation in time and space to help them reveal their hidden meanings. I am using figures and landscapes from the magic lantern slides and the Soibelman Archive at Visual Studies Workshop. My process explores collaboration\, "Patacritical Interrogation Techniques"\, the word "random"\, and post-facto rationalization. \n [source: VSW e-mail\, 2015-Apr-27]

SUMMARY:Sucker Punch screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Sucker Punch (Zack Snyder\, Us/Canada 2011\, 110 min.\, 35mm) tonight at 8 p.m. \nWhen we were thinking about how James Card\, as an archivist and as a curator\, would have felt and behaved in the 21st century—which films he would have collected and programmed?—and taking into consideration everything we knew about this beloved rogue as a human being and as a professional—from his passion for broad drama\, action and romance\, to his penchant for movies that were always slightly off the beaten track—we came up with an idea for a sucker punch. And here it is: Sucker Punch\, a horribly underrated explosion of pure cinematic joie de vivre\, written and directed by an equally underrated contemporary master Zack Snyder. The subject of this kinetic masterpiece is really cinema itself—a magical apparatus that has been generating the most vivid and impossible dreams for well over a century now. And like dreams themselves\, Sucker Punch is absorbing\, elusive\, imperfect\, excessive\, and unsettling\, but the world without it would be more than just a little bit grayer. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Apr-20]

SUMMARY:Norte\, hangganan ng kasaysayan (Norte\, The End of History) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Norte\, hangganan ng kasaysayan (Norte\, The End of History\, Lav Diaz\, Philippines 2013\, 250 min.\, DCP) at 2 p.m. \nAn embittered law student commits a brutal double murder; a family man takes the fall and is forced into a harsh prison sentence; a mother and her two children wander the countryside looking for some kind of redemption. Lav Diaz's epic reimagining of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is both an intimate human drama and a cosmic treatise on the origin of evil. Unfolding across the sun-drenched fields and dark city streets of the Filipino island of Luzon\, Norte\, The End of History is a tale of murder\, hate\, and hope from one of the world's most uncompromising cinematic visionaries. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Apr-20]
