SUMMARY:The Photographic Historical Society Meeting (2018-Feb-15 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:VSW is hosting The Photographic Historical Society Meeting featuring a presentation by Virginia Dodier titled Outside/In: Clementina Hawarden's Domestic Portraits. \nArt photographer or portrait photographer—or both? Clementina Hawarden (1822-1865) won awards for artistic costume tableaux of her daughters. Using images selected from the 775 Hawarden photographs in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection\, Virginia Dodier will discuss how Hawarden's photographic style evolved while her family remained the focus of her life and work. \n [source: The Photographic Historical Society e-mail\, 2018-Feb-8]

SUMMARY:Notebook\, Melodic Inversion\, The Dead\, Anticipation of the Night screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen: Notebook (Marie Menken\, U.S. 1962\, 10 min.)\, Melodic Inversion (Ian Hugo\, U.S. 1958\, 8 min.)\, The Dead (Stan Brakhage\, U.S. 1960\, 11 min.)\, and Anticipation of the Night (Stan Brakhage\, U.S. 1958\, 40 min.) with an introduction by Thomas Beard as part of the Metaphors on Vision series. \nFirst published in 1963 by Jonas Mekas as a special issue of Film Culture\, Stan Brakhage's Metaphors on Vision stands as the major theoretical statement by one of avant garde cinema's most influential figures\, a treatise on mythopoeia and the nature of visual experience written in a style as idiosyncratic as his art. Long out of print\, Metaphors on Vision has just been republished by Anthology Film Archives and Light Industry (edited by scholar P. Adams Sitney). To celebrate this definitive new edition\, the Eastman Museum presents a program of films that combines a pair of rarely screened works that influenced Brakhage—Marie Menken's Notebook (1963) and Ian Hugo's Melodic Inversion (1958)— with two of his own films\, the productions of which are discussed extensively in Metaphors—the pivotal Anticipation of the Night (1958) and The Dead (1960). \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Feb-14]
