SUMMARY:[Noo Phone in the Black Space]: or How to Avoid Roaming Charges (2017-May-25 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Squeaky Wheel is proud to present an augmented reality performance by Buffalo based media artist Yvette Granata and San Jose based artist and performer Andrew Blanton. For two consecutive evenings the artists will install and perform in a visual\, sonic performance that transforms the grand halls of Silo City through emerging technologies. Can augmented reality be used as the creation of new forms of collectivity? Or does it produce new forms of spatio-temporal apartheids? Through their respective approaches to performative augmentation and mobile media\, Andrew Blanton and Yvette Granata's works inquire into the manner in which augmented reality and media performance can be framed as a critical dialogue between the alliances and the vacuoles of mobile realities. Interpreting augmented reality as performance space\, their works are audiovisual performances and variations on collective and un-collective space. The works form a critical dialogue on augmented life\, collecting performances of sound and image — an ambient group text message\, a vertical disorientation through camera-apps\, a hand-held sonic immersion\, and a modulation of ambient feedback of the Silos. \n [source: Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center website\, 2017-May-22]

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Social Reportage: The Sign Project
DESCRIPTION:St. Joseph's House of Hospitality will host an Opening Reception for Social Reportage: The Sign Project\, on display through June 30\, featuring works by Norman Strothers\, Kelly Mullaney\, Tim Chaddock\, Ed Stone\, Kristy Bianchi\, Julie Oldfield\, and Arleen Thaler. \nSession IV of the Social Reportage class at Flower City Arts Center found students immersed in the lives of those who call the streets home and those living in poverty that we might otherwise overlook. The Sign Project came about when a homeless man\, Jon who lives in a tent in Rochester\, New York\, shared a link from rethinkhomeless.com with photojournalist\, Arleen Thaler asking if she could do something like that here. Rethink Homelessness\, a coalition located in Florida\, asked their homeless friends to write down a fact about themselves that other people wouldn't know just by walking past them. The Sign Project is a result of a partnership that grew between Arleen's students and the men and women who shared a little piece of themselves with us. Using cardboard they dispelled some of the myths surrounding homelessness. Their answers may offer a glimpse you might otherwise be unaware of. \n [source: Flower City Arts Center website\, 2017-May-22]
