SUMMARY:Confessions Of A Nightingale theatrical performance (2015-Nov-6 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:He was one of the great twentieth century American playwrights\, and Tennessee Williams' private persona is shown to have been just as fascinating as his plays in this delightful\, moving\, and incisive ninety minute drama. The play is structured as an interview with a reporter\, to whose unheard questions Williams responds directly to the audience as if they are doing the asking. We learn of the struggles of his early years\, his first successes\, the price of his fame and his later years of dissolution and decline\, all in Williams' delightfully witty style. Part of the Rainbow Theater Festival. \n [source: Bread and Water Theatre website\, 2015-Nov-2]

SUMMARY:The Sun Ra Arkestra directed by Marshall Allen
DESCRIPTION:From the mid-1950s to his death\, Sun Ra led "The Arkestra\," an ensemble with an ever-changing name and flexible lineup\, although certain core members remained with the group through its various incarnations (Marshal Allen\, John Gilmore\, June Tyson\, and others). It was by turns called "The Solar Myth Arkestra\," "His Cosmo Discipline Arkestra\," the "Blue Universe Arkestra\," "Myth Science Arkestra\," "The Jet Set Omniverse Arkestra\," and many other variations. Sun Ra asserted that the ever-changing name of his ensemble reflected the ever-changing nature of his music. His mainstream success was limited\, but Sun Ra was a prolific recording artist and frequent live performer. His music ranged from keyboard solos to big bands of over 30 musicians and touched on virtually the entire history of jazz\, from ragtime to swing music\, from bebop to free jazz. He also used free improvisation and was one of the early musicians to make extensive use of electronic keyboards. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2015-Nov-2]

SUMMARY:La maternelle (Children of Montmarte) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen La maternelle (Children of Montmarte\, Jean Benoît-Lévy\, Marie Epstein\, France 1933\, 83 min.\, 35mm\, French w/ subtitles). \nSeemingly destined to a rosy future made of fancy dresses and evenings out with Paris high society\, Rose suddenly realizes the harshness of life when her bankrupt father dies and her fiancé leaves her. She settles for a modest existence\, taking a job as maid in a kindergarten in Montmartre\, home of working-class Parisians\, drug dealers\, prostitutes\, and social outcasts—but\, it will turn into a touching and rewarding experience. Directed and adapted by Jean Benoît-Lévy and Marie Epstein from Léon Frapié's Prix Goncourt—winning novel La maternelle (1904)\, Children of Montmartre is a most human representation of children's life in an educational institution in the best tradition of French realism between the wars. The film's insight into the children's inner world notably anticipates themes and suggestions of films such as Truffaut's The 400 Blows (1959) and Small Change (1976)\, De Sica's The Children Are Watching U.S. (1944)\, and Reed's The Fallen Idol (1948). A true rediscovery from the George Eastman Museum vaults\, this rare vintage print is not to be missed! Presented by Daniela Currò\, preservation manager\, Moving Image Department. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Nov-2]
