DESCRIPTION:In the Kusler-Cox Auditorium of the Rundel Library Building Morris A. Pierce will present a lecture titled Rochester's Rich History: Water for Rochester\, At Last. \n"Water for Rochester\, At Last" will continue the story of Rochester's attempts to build a water works after the expensive failure of the Rochester Water Works Company. Despite a few last attempts to have a private company build the system\, the city decided to build two separate systems\, one for fire protection in the business district that was demonstrated in February 1874\, and a second general water supply from Hemlock Lake that was completed in 1876. \n [source: Rochester City Newspaper events calendar\, 2020-Feb-3]

SUMMARY:Citizen K screening (2020-Feb-15 @ 3 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Citizen K (Alex Gibney\, U.K. / U.S. 2019\, 126 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nOscar winning writer/director Alex Gibney's revelatory Citizen K is an intimate yet sweeping look at post-Soviet Russia from the perspective of the enigmatic Mikhail Khodorkovsky\, a former oligarch turned political dissident. Benefitting from the chaos that ensued after the dissolution of the U.S.S.R.\, Khodorkovsky was able to amass a fortune in financing and oil production and became the richest man in Russia. But when he accused the new Putin regime of corruption\, Khodorkovsky was arrested\, his assets were seized and following a series of show trials\, he was sentenced to more than ten-years in prison. Today\, as an exile living in London\, he continues to speak out against Putin's two-decade stranglehold on power. \nExpertly researched and photographed\, Gibney uses Khodorkovsky's story as a way to explore the complex interplay between oligarchy and government and its destructive effect on democracy\, in Russia and beyond. \n\n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2020-Feb-10]
