SUMMARY:Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool screening (2019-Oct-22 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool (Stanley Nelson\, U.S. 2019\, 115 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nMiles Davis: Horn player\, bandleader\, innovator. Elegant\, intellectual\, vain. Callous\, conflicted\, controversial. Magnificent\, mercurial. Genius. The very embodiment of cool. The man with a sound so beautiful it could break your heart. \nThe central theme of Miles Davis's life was his restless determination to break boundaries and live life on his own terms. It made him a star—it also made him incredibly difficult to live with\, for the people who loved him most. Again and again\, in music and in life\, Miles broke with convention—and when he thought his work came to represent a new convention\, he changed it again. Miles's bold disregard for tradition\, his clarity of vision\, his relentless drive\, and constant thirst for new experiences made him an inspiring collaborator to fellow musicians and a cultural icon to generations of listeners. It made him an innovator in music—from bebop to "cool jazz\," modern quintets\, orchestral music\, jazz fusion\, rock 'n' roll\, and even hip-hop. \n\n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Silent Documentaries Program screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will host a Silent Documentaries Program with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli featuring \n\nLas Hurdes (Luis Buñuel\, Spain 1933\, 30 min.)\nÀ propos de Nice (Boris Kaufman\, Jean Vigo\, France 1930\, 25 min.)\nBerliner Stilleben (László Moholy-Nagy\, Germany 1926\, 9 min.)\nManhatta (Charles Sheeler\, Paul Strand\, U.S. 1921\, 11 min.)\n\nWhile the earliest films were simple shots of real life as it happened\, bringing images of faraway places and actions to the masses\, the term "documentary" was not coined until 1926. Early forms of this new genre often used staged or re-created action to propel the narrative and reflect the director's vision. This program explores the elusive nature of documentary films in the silent period\, including a surrealist look at a remote region of Spain\, an atypical travelogue of the southern coast of France\, and two city symphonies\, one of Berlin and one of New York City. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-14]
