SUMMARY:Lust for Life screening (2019-May-20 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Lust for Life (Vincente Minnelli\, U.S. 1956\, 122 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Eastman Entertains series. \nVincente Minnelli's bold\, colorful biography of Vincent Van Gogh is anchored by the vibrant performances of Kirk Douglas as Vincent and James Donald as his brother\, Theo. Van Gogh\, following an unsuccessful preaching career\, finds himself drawn to the people of the town and the work that they do\, which leads him to find drawing and\, ultimately\, painting. He is influenced by his relationships with painters Anton Mauve (Noel Purcell) and Paul Gaugin (Anthony Quinn)\, but the beautiful images he paints belie a struggle with depression. Douglas was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance and Quinn won his second Oscar in five years for his. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-May-6]

SUMMARY:Hornets' Nest: The Kavanaugh Files theatrical performance
DESCRIPTION:Geva Theatre Center will host a Hornets' Nest reading of The Kavanaugh Files by Joe Salvatore\, and Keith R. Huff. \nIn September 2018\, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford came forward with allegations that she had been sexually assaulted by then Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh when they were both teenagers. The allegations prompted a second set of hearings conducted by the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 27\, 2018. Blasey Ford and Kavanaugh both offered sworn testimony and faced questioning by members of the committee and a designated proxy\, Rachel Mitchell. Following these hearings\, the committee voted 11-10 to send the nomination to the Senate floor. On October 6\, 2018\, the Senate voted 50-48 to confirm Kavanaugh to become an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. \nThe Kavanaugh Files is a verbatim performance of key moments from the hearings. Actors perform the original words\, gestures\, and disfluencies of the real-life people\, and in most cases\, the genders have been inverted—women perform the roles that men had in the real hearings\, and men perform the women. How is our perception of a person's behavior influenced by their gender\, and how does that impact the ways in which we respond to national events? \n\n [source: Geva Theatre Center website\, 2019-May-13]
