SUMMARY:Van Gogh: Of Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Van Gogh: Of Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies (Giovanni Piscaglia\, Italy 2018\, 86 min.) \nTake a fresh look at Van Gogh through the legacy of the greatest private collector of the Dutch artist's work: Helene Kröller-Müller (1869-1939)\, one of the first to recognize the genius of Van Gogh. In the early 20th century\, Kröller-Müller amassed nearly 300 of Van Gogh's paintings and drawings now housed at her namesake museum in Holland. \nThe Basilica Palladina exhibition in Vicenza\, "Amid Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies\," with 40 paintings and 85 drawings on loan from the Kröller-Müller Museum\, lends the basis of this program\, revealing Van Gogh's art and his genius\, while allowing audiences to understand the importance of drawing as part of his craft. \nVan Gogh's seemingly instinctive canvases were the result of long\, preparatory studies very rarely exhibited – not just sketches but stunning works of art in and of themselves\, where the broken flow of lines that characterize the style and strokes in Van Gogh's paintings can already be seen. \n\n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Apr-25]

SUMMARY:Nude on the Moon: Films by Doris Wishman and Peggy Ahwesh
DESCRIPTION:Some thirty years ago\, the artist Peggy Ahwesh began to cultivate a fascination with the films of Doris Wishman\, the prolific director behind grindhouse gems like Nude on the Moon (1961)\, Bad Girls Go to Hell (1965)\, and Let Me Die a Woman (1977). Determined to meet the doyenne of the skin flick in the flesh\, Ahwesh flew down from New York with fellow filmmaker M.M. Serra in 1994 to surprise Wishman at her workplace\, the Pink Pussycat Boutique in Coconut Grove\, Miami. The fruits of this encounter would go into the making of The Films of Doris Wishman\, a one-issue zine produced by Ahwesh in 1995. This program celebrates the 2019 release of the reprinted zine by Inpatient Press and Light Industry\, with additional heretofore unreleased material documenting the encounter between Wishman\, Ahwesh and other artists. \nOur screening includes Peggy Ahwesh's The Color of Love (1994)\, an erotic found-footage tribute to Wishman\, as well as Wishman's own Nude on the Moon (1961). Light Industry's Thomas Beard will introduce the program\, and copies of The Films of Doris Wishman\, edited by Peggy Ahwesh\, will be available. \n\n [source: Visual Studies Workshop website\, 2019-Apr-29]

SUMMARY:Phoebe Legere musical performance
DESCRIPTION:It is easy to get lost in the sheer beauty of Phoebe Legere's shamanic voice. Her pianism runs the gamut from Harlem stride\, to modal improvisations to rollicking New Orleans jazz and blues. Phoebe straps on her accordion\, delivering authentic Cajun Joyfulness. "I love to bring people together. I love to see them dance and smile." At Abilene Phoebe will be singing songs from her upcoming album Squeeze Me… Phoebe says\, "These are songs about how we live now": from 'Texting in the Dark' to 'Crazy White Trash\,' and her first radio hit "Marilyn Monroe" to her recent roots radio top-20 song about a lady truck driver (Heart of Love). This is a rare opportunity to experience Phoebe's intellectual\, comedic and musical range in an intimate environment. Phoebe is an accomplished blues guitar player\, and she also plays many traditional instruments from Donkey Skull and Aztec Death Whistle\, to Spoons and Native American flute. Phoebe will be joined by local hero Washboard Dave Paprocki\, bassist Jay Chafee\, along with Ben Haravitch and Bernie Heveron. Phoebe is known for transcendent jams that blend jazz\, blues\, Zydeco\, Native American medicine chants into a spicy\, spiritual gumbo. All proceeds from the show go to Phoebe's nonprofit Foundation for New American Art\, a 501 c3 organization founded that brings Art and Music to the children of low-income communities. \n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2019-Apr-29]
