The slovenly crew is soon put in order by new Captain Philip Queeg (Humphrey Bogart). A string of incidents lead many in the crew to believe that Queeg is paranoid and perhaps insane\, culminating in a mutiny when they fear that the ship will sink during a typhoon. The film follows the story of the crew from sea to land as Ensign Keith and Lieutenant Maryk (Van Johnson) are tried for mutiny by a court-martial.
