SUMMARY:Movies and Dharma: A Zen Perspective film screenings
DESCRIPTION:Visual Studies Workshop will host a screening of short films titled Movies and Dharma: A Zen Perspective featuring:  \n\nReflecting Pool (Bill Viola\, U.S. 1979\, 7 min.)\nNeighbours (Norman McLaren\, Canada 1952\, 8 min.)\n"A" (Jan Lenica\, West Germany 1965\, 10 min.)\nWhy Me? (J.Perlman\, D. Lamb\, Canada 1978\, 10 min.)\n\nFounded in 1966\, the Rochester Zen Center (RZC) is one of the largest and most respected Buddhist centers in North America. Through daily meditation\, residential training programs\, and introductory workshops\, the Center has helped introduce Buddhism into the American mainstream\, while simultaneously reshaping and integrating the forms of Zen into America's own unique culture. This program\, chosen by long-time residents of the RZC\, observes the Dharma (the nature of reality as taught by the Buddha) in familiar and not-so familiar films from the VSW collection. DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Monrovia\, Indiana (Frederick Wiseman\, U.S. 2018\, 143 min.\, DCP) as part of the Rochester Premiere series.  \nAfter the 2016 election\, renowned documentarian Frederick Wiseman trained his lens on the rural town of Monrovia\, Indiana\, for his continuing meditation on contemporary American life. True to Wiseman's style\, the film forgoes interviews in favor of patient and dispassionate observations of public life. The daily rituals in the small town of a thousand residents encompass town council meetings\, school band performances\, weddings\, funerals\, and the local diner. By holding the complexities of community and spiritual values together with the lived contradictions inherent to daily life\, the film allows a nuanced picture of Monrovia to emerge that both embraces and surpasses stereotypes. According to Wiseman\, the film explores "the importance of rural America as a formative center of American politics and values."
