SUMMARY:Suicide: The Ripple Effect screening (2018-Dec-5 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Regal Eastview Mall will host a screening of Suicide: The Ripple Effect (Greg Dicharry\, Kevin Hines\, U.S. 2018\, 93 min.) \nAt age 19\, Kevin Hines attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Seventeen years later\, he still struggles with many of the same symptoms that led him to attempt to take his life\, but he is on a mission to use his story to help others stay alive. Kevin has also been one of the key catalysts in helping end a nearly 80-year long fight to construct suicide prevention net on the iconic San Francisco bridge. Kevin takes a journey to better understand the ripple effects his suicide attempt had on his family\, friends\, and the first responders who helped save him. He's also working to shine light on inspirational individuals\, families\, and organizations who are using personal pain to help others find the hope they need to heal. \n [source: Reddit website\, 2018-Nov-19]

SUMMARY:Here at the Water's Edge\, An Essay on Death: A Memorial to John F. Kennedy screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Here at the Water's Edge (Leo Hurwitz and Charles Pratt\, U.S. 1961\, 60 min.\, 16mm)\, and An Essay on Death: A Memorial to John F. Kennedy (Leo Hurwitz\, U.S. 1964\, 76 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Leo Hurwitz series. \nHurwitz's visual poem of the sights and sounds of New York Harbor in the late 1950s\, Here at the Water's Edge is a time capsule of when Manhattan's waterways were vibrant and bustling. Critic Prairie Miller called it "the most haunting film I have ever seen. The film's poetry is utter visual—such wonder at the ordinary\, such mastery of the natural." National Educational Television (NET)\, the precursor to PBS\, sought to make a memorial to the late President John F. Kennedy for the first anniversary of his assassination. Rather than replaying the events of the year before\, NET producer Brice Edwards asked Hurwitz to make a program exploring death itself. The film was the first public recognition of Hurwitz's work on television since his blacklisting\, and it led to other documentaries for NET later in the decade. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Nov-26]
