SUMMARY:Men and Women Becoming Allies for Each Other: Learning the Gift of Listening Deeply (2018-Nov-9 @ 12:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Being deeply\, empathically listened to can be a revelation and gift for both speaker and listener. Even though it isn't widely known in our general culture\, deep listening gives the speaker a space to see all around something that has been only partially seen from one angle before. Men and women need to do this kind of listening together more than ever these days. The Circle process we will be using creates a confidentially safe\, brave space for honest sharing and deep listening for both men and women. Women need to hear how men have been affected by the imbalance of centuries and men need to hear the suffering of women created by this issue. Because this has affected all of us\, the healing that can come from hearing each other's stories can be profound. Join us in this Listening Circle to begin healing the divide that creates so much misunderstanding and suffering in our personal development\, our relationships\, our institutions\, and our culture. Let's move together toward the biggest picture our hearts can hold for a beautiful future\, one truly heard story at a time. We will learn together to listen and speak with courage\, openness\, honesty\, and compassion. \n [source: Rochester Pachamama Alliance e-mail\, 2018-Oct-1]

SUMMARY:Reception: Family Photographs
DESCRIPTION:The Photography Gallery of the Flower City Arts Center will host a Reception for Family Photographs\, on display through December 15. \nFrom the daguerreotype of the 1850's\, to Kodak's snapshot craze a hundred years later\, to the countless photos currently stored in your iCloud—the history of family photographs is almost as long and varied as the history of photography itself. Unlike any other medium before it\, photography allows us to capture the exact likeness of our loved ones. The act of taking photographs is both an affirmation and denial of death's inevitability. Family Photographs is a selection of images curated by juror Sara Macel exploring the ideas of family\, memory\, intimacy\, and domesticity through the use of contemporary and archival photography. \n [source: Flower City Arts Center website\, 2018-Nov-6]

SUMMARY:Kamerdyner (The Butler) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Kamerdyner (The Butler\, Filip Bajon\, Poland 1975\, 150 min.) as part of the Polish Film Festival. \nThis historical drama\, which spans four decades\, from 1900 to 1945\, is a truth-based story of tangled fates of Poles\, Kashubians and Germans\, told on the background of turbulent events of the first half of the 20th century. After his mother dies Mateusz Krol\, a Kashubian boy\, is taken in by a Prussian aristocrat Gerda von Krauss. He is growing up in her palace. The daughter of the von Krausses\, Marita\, is the same age as he is. Love buds between the two. The boy's godfather is Bazyli Miotke\, a Kashubian patriot who fights in Versailles for Kashubia to have its place on the map of Poland\, and goes on to build the symbol of its economic success\, the City of Gdynia. The Treaty of Versailles grants Poland its independence but also makes the von Krauss family lose their property and influence. All the protagonists can feel that the world as they know it is about to change drastically. Hostility and hatred increase among the Kashubs\, Poles and Germans. WWII breaks out. In the Piaśnica Forest the Nazis murder civilians\, which becomes the first genocide of this war. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-Nov-6]

SUMMARY:House of Stronzo screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen House of Stronzo (Matthew White\, U.S. 2018\, 56 min.\, DCP) followed by a Q&A with both the director Matthew White\, and the scoring musician on the film as part of the Rochester Premiere series. \nPete Cecere is a collector of folk and outsider art from the Americas. Over his fifty years of collecting\, he has amassed more than five thousand pieces\, all stored in his own home\, his self-styled "House of Stronzo." As Cecere ages\, and as the appreciation of folk art has expanded\, he is concerned about where his collection will find a new home. Enter the San Antonio Museum of Art\, which agrees to mount an exhibition and honor him for capturing a segment of art that might have been lost if not for him. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Nov-6]

SUMMARY:Quakers\, Indigenous Peoples\, and the Land
DESCRIPTION:Quakers served as witnesses to the Canandaigua Treaty of 1794\, polishing the chain of friendship between the Iroquois and Quakers that dates back to 1682. After briefly outlining how greed for land in Pennsylvania and New York strained this friendship historically\, Mattie Schmitt and Mike Farrell\, of the Rochester Friends Meeting\, and Michelle Shenandoah\, JD & LL.M. (Oneida-Wolf Clan\, thought leader\, writer and consultant)\, will lead a discussion of how we all can grow to be friends and allies of Indigenous peoples in the 21st century. Sponsored by 1816 Farmington Quaker Meetinghouse with support from New York Yearly Meeting Indian Affairs Committee\, and by Rochester Friends Meeting. \n [source: Rochester City Newspaper events calendar\, 2018-Nov-7]
