SUMMARY:Orphan Train Immersion Experience
DESCRIPTION:Upon arrival\, attendees will receive a card describing the circumstances of a child who actually rode the Orphan Train. After a brief introduction\, participants take a 14-minute ride around the museum's track as two improvisers acting as chaperones treat them like orphans. When participants disembark\, improvisers portraying the Midwesterners will inspect\, judge and decide whether a rider is worthy of adoption. The goal is to let participants step into the shoes of displaced children who have little control over what happens to them. While the external circumstances of the Orphan Train children are different\, the inner turmoil and emotional impact are similar to the feelings of the immigrant children taken at the border and older foster care children waiting to find permanent homes. \n [source: Rochester City Newspaper events calendar\, 2018-Oct-24]

SUMMARY:Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. screening (2018-Oct-27 @ 3 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. (Steve Loveridge\, U.K. / U.S. 2018\, 96 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nDrawn from a cache of personal video recordings from the past 22 years\, director Steve Loveridge's Sundance award winning Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. is a startlingly personal profile of the critically acclaimed artist\, chronicling her remarkable journey from refugee immigrant to pop star. She began as Matangi. Daughter of the founder of Sri Lanka's armed Tamil resistance\, she hid from the government in the face of a vicious and bloody civil war. When her family fled to the U.K.\, she became Maya\, a precocious and creative immigrant teenager in London. Finally\, the world met her as M.I.A. when she emerged on the global stage\, having created a mashup\, cut-and-paste identity that pulled from every corner of her journey along the way; a sonic sketchbook that blended Tamil politics\, art school punk\, hip-hop beats and the unwavering\, ultra-confident voice of a burgeoning multicultural youth. Never one to compromise on her vision\, Maya kept her camera rolling throughout. Matangi\, Maya\, M.I.A. provides unparalleled\, intimate access to the artist in her battles with the music industry and mainstream media as her success and fame explodes\, becoming one of the most recognizable\, outspoken and provocative voices in music today. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-Oct-22]

SUMMARY:Noce i dnie (Nights and Days) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Noce i dnie (Nights and Days\, Jerzy Antczak\, Poland 1975\, 177 min.\, DCP\, Polish w/subtitles) as part of the A Century of Polish Independence series. \nThe film portrays the life of two generations of the Niechcic family during a half century of Polish history\, between 1865 and 1914. Barbara Niechcic (Jadwiga Baranska) escapes from the town of Kaliniec at the outbreak of World War I. She recalls her life's triumphs and hardships as her family attempts to hold itself together and retain its dignity despite persecution\, expulsion\, and losing everything it holds dear. This colorful family saga offers rich atmosphere and a sentimental look at the impoverished nobility\, the genesis of the intelligentsia. Nights and Days was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film\, and Baranska won the 1976 best actress award at the Berlin Film Festival for her inspired performance. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Oct-22]
