SUMMARY:Adair Rounthwaite Lecture: Between Hearts and Media—Artists in Public Space in Zagreb\, 1975–79
DESCRIPTION:Adair Rounthwaite's talk is part of her current book project\, which addresses the relationship between art and public space in Zagreb\, in the former Yugoslavia\, in the late 1970s and early 1980s\, a period during which artists combined public engagement in city spaces with critical practices that reflected a disillusionment with the public sphere. Routhwaite's study focuses on practitioners from the conceptualist generation known as the New Artistic Practice (Nova umjetnicka praksa)\, and in particular on the Group of Six Authors (Grupa Å¡estorice autora). It aims to contribute to a greater understanding of the diverse modalities of artists' engagement with public space in the 20th century\, and in particular of the ways in which experimental artists approached the public sphere in formerly socialist and communist Europe. \n [source: University of Rochester events calendar\, 2018-Oct-15]

SUMMARY:Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. screening (2018-Oct-23 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. (Steve Loveridge\, U.K. / U.S. 2018\, 96 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nDrawn from a cache of personal video recordings from the past 22 years\, director Steve Loveridge's Sundance award winning Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. is a startlingly personal profile of the critically acclaimed artist\, chronicling her remarkable journey from refugee immigrant to pop star. She began as Matangi. Daughter of the founder of Sri Lanka's armed Tamil resistance\, she hid from the government in the face of a vicious and bloody civil war. When her family fled to the U.K.\, she became Maya\, a precocious and creative immigrant teenager in London. Finally\, the world met her as M.I.A. when she emerged on the global stage\, having created a mashup\, cut-and-paste identity that pulled from every corner of her journey along the way; a sonic sketchbook that blended Tamil politics\, art school punk\, hip-hop beats and the unwavering\, ultra-confident voice of a burgeoning multicultural youth. Never one to compromise on her vision\, Maya kept her camera rolling throughout. Matangi\, Maya\, M.I.A. provides unparalleled\, intimate access to the artist in her battles with the music industry and mainstream media as her success and fame explodes\, becoming one of the most recognizable\, outspoken and provocative voices in music today. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-Oct-22]

SUMMARY:Maciste all'Inferno (Maciste in Hell) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Maciste all'Inferno (Maciste in Hell\, Guido Brignone\, Italy 1925\, 95 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nThe Marvelous Maciste made his debut in the 1914 Italian classic Cabiria and in fifteen years appeared in 27 silent films\, played by Bartolomeo Pagano in all. The pattern established for these films shows strongman Maciste as a hero dedicated to restoring order\, overthrowing evil rulers\, and in the end\, getting the virtuous girl while resisting the temptress\, in many locations around the world. Perhaps it was only a matter of time before the perpetrator of all evil called on Maciste. Dragged down into the fiery depths of hell\, Maciste can rely on only his virtue and his strength to get him back to the land of the living. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Oct-15]
