SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Lola Flash—AIDS FLASHback
DESCRIPTION:VSW will host an Opening Reception for Lola Flash's AIDS FLASHback\, on display through October 27. \nLola Flash has been photographing for over thirty years with numerous exhibitions to date. She earned a BA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a MA from the London College of Printing. AIDS FLASHback focuses on Flash's previous work as an activist. About the work she notes\, "These selections are a reflection of the late 80s and early 90s\, a time when the AIDS crisis was at its height in New York City. I was an activist and a member of ACT UP\, as well as ART+ (an affinity group focusing on issues around brown people affected by AIDS). Some of the images are from ACT UP demonstrations in New York and Washington\, DC. Others are photographs which speak to the sadness and loss of too many friends during that period\, as well as the anger towards many of the institutions that silently watched us die." \n [source: Visual Studies Workshop website\, 2018-Sep-3]

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: A Material Thing by John Shea
DESCRIPTION:The Flower City Arts Center will host an Opening Reception in the Firehouse Gallery for A Material Thing by John Shea\, on display through September 29. \nA Material Thing is an attempt to construct a logic in which to better see objects\, both as discrete and in relationship\, and to understand from that relationship the objects themselves. The work takes a series of systems and creates abstracted representations that connect to the way we see and think about objects\, the way objects relate to other objects\, while also questioning the relationship between part and whole. \n [source: Flower City Arts Center website\, 2018-Sep-3]
