SUMMARY:South Pacific screening (2018-Jun-4 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen South Pacific (Joshua Logan\, U.S. 1958\, 140 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Eastman Entertains series. \nBased on a book by James A. Michener\, South Pacific is a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic in gorgeous\, widescreen color. The film provides a veritable feast for the eyes and ears as Rossano Brazzi and Mitzi Gaynor find love\, anguish\, and eventual happiness amid the setting of a war-torn Pacific island. The stellar soundtrack includes such classics as "Bali Ha'i\," "Some Enchanted Evening\," and "Happy Talk." \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-14]

SUMMARY:The Death of Stalin screening (2018-Jun-4 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen The Death of Stalin (Armando Iannucci\, France / U.K. / Belgium / Canada 2017\, 107 min.) "In early-1953 Moscow\, under the Great Terror's heavy cloak of state paranoia\, the ever-watchful Soviet leader\, Joseph Stalin\, collapses unexpectedly of a brain haemorrhage. Inevitably\, when his body is discovered in the following morning\, a frenetic surge of raw panic spreads like a virus in the senior members of the Council of Ministers\, as they scramble to maintain order\, weed out the competition\, and\, ultimately\, take power." SUMMARY:David Murray and Kahil El'Zabar Duo musical performance
DESCRIPTION:For over 18 years\, Bop Shop Records has had a happy and productive relationship with AACM master percussionist Kahil El'Zabar. Going back to 2000 when he first brought his main band\, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble\, to the atrium at Village Gate\, he has graced us with several versions of his various ensembles. Earlier in 2016\, we presented an edition of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble featuring trombonist Craig Harris and baritone saxophonist Hamiet Blueitt. Back in 2001\, we presented the duo of El'Zabar and violinist Billy Bang. But perhaps our most well-attended concert was a duet set with saxophonist David Murray in 2000. And we are proud that it resulted in the album We Is: Live At The Bop Shop\, released on Delmark Records to great acclaim. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-May-28]
