SUMMARY:Diva screening; Kearstin Piper Brown musical performance
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Diva (Jean-Jacques Beineix\, France 1981\, 117 min.) at 7:30 p.m. preceded by a musical performance by soprano Kearstin Piper Brown for their Diva Festiva: A Fundraising Event For The Little. \nThe fundraising evening includes a rare 35mm screening of 1982's Diva. The classic film has a special bond with The Little — it was one of the longest running films in the theater's history. Despite this epic run\, screenings of Diva are rare today\, and that's why we're thrilled to begin theater 1's historic restoration with this intelligent\, brilliant\, and memorable movie. \nTwo tapes\, two Parisian mob killers\, one corrupt policeman\, an opera fan\, a teenage thief\, and the coolest philosopher ever filmed. All these characters twist their way through an intricate and stylish French language thriller. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-May-10]

SUMMARY:The Plastic Dome of Norma Jean screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Plastic Dome of Norma Jean (Juleen Compton\, U.S. 1966\, 82 min.\, 35mm) as part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation Tour series. \nCompton's second independent film is the story of a clairvoyant teenage girl\, Norma Jean\, taken advantage of by a boy band fashioned after the Beatles\, determined to exploit the young woman's powers as part of a hoax revival. Filmed in the Ozarks with a cast of young\, unknown actors\, the picture suggests a tender tale about a pair of young companions. However\, the movie quickly takes an unusual turn when Norma Jean and her friend Vance pick up an enormous plastic dome they've ordered. Stylistically accomplished\, the movie is an impressive example of American independent feature filmmaking during the mid-1960s and an uncommon portrayal\, for the time\, of female agency. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-21]

SUMMARY:Western Centuries musical performance
DESCRIPTION:When did country music start to sound the same? The first generation of country artists borrowed from everything around them: Appalachian string band music\, Texas fiddle traditions\, cowboy songs\, Delta blues. In an era of unprecedented access to our musical pasts\, shouldn't country music be even more diverse than it was in its infancy? Honky-tonk super-group Western Centuries\, back with a new album in 2018\, surely understands this. They aren't bound by any dictum to write songs in a modern country\, or even a retro country style; instead they're taking their own personal influences as three very different songwriters and fusing it into a sound that moves beyond the constraints of country. Part of the reason they can make music with this range of influences is because of their roots in city life. Both Cahalen Morrison and Ethan Lawton\, two of the three principal songwriters\, live in Seattle's diverse South end\, and the third songwriter\, Jim Miller\, spends most of his time in and around New York City. The urban landscape is rarely mentioned in country music\, but it makes for a refreshing sound that draws as easily from modern R&B as it does George Jones. It helps too that the album was recorded and co-produced by acclaimed musician and Grammy-winning producer Joel Savoy in Eunice\, Louisiana\, where local Cajun and Creole artists have always been adept at marrying old country sounds with R&B and rock 'n' roll. \n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2018-May-21]
