SUMMARY:Computer Science Seminar: Rahman Lavaee Mashhadi\, Profile-Guided Memory Layout: Theory and Practice
DESCRIPTION:In Wegman Hall #2506 on the UofR Campus\, Rahman Lavaee Mashhadi will present a Computer Science Seminar titled Profile-Guided Memory Layout: Theory and Practice. \nModern software is growing in size and complexity\, far faster than is hardware in performance. In particular\, it executes and accesses an increasingly large amount of code and data\, leading to performance bottlenecks in different levels of the memory hierarchy. Memory layout optimization can alleviate this effect by rearranging code and data in memory\, in order to reduce cache misses. \n [source: University of Rochester events calendar\, 2018-Jan-22]

SUMMARY:The Square screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The Square (Ruben Östlund\, Sweden / Germany / France / Denmark 2017\, 142 min.) \nChristian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum\, a divorced but devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next show is "The Square"\, an installation which invites passersby to altruism\, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. But sometimes\, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian's foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile\, the museum's PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for "The Square". The response is overblown and sends Christian\, as well as the museum\, into an existential crisis. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2018-Jan-18]

SUMMARY:Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (Ashutosh Gowariker\, India 2001\, 220 min.\, 35mm\, Hindi\, Awadhi\, Urdu w/subtitles) as part of the Stories of Indian Cinema series. \nOne of the biggest sensations of modern Indian cinema\, Lagaan is an epic tale of love and power (and sports!) set in a small village under British occupation. In the year 1893\, a rebellious young farmer rallies his community to oppose the tax imposed by the foreign oppressor. An English captain challenges the protesters with cricket\, a game then completely unknown in India. The stake is nothing less than the villagers' lives. A triumph of romance\, choreography (in the exhilarating musical numbers)\, and heart-stopping action\, Lagaan displays the genius of the Bollywood style at its very best. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Jan-22]
