SUMMARY:Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart (Tracy Heather Strain\, U.S. 2017\, 60 min.) followed by a panel discussion as part of the The Black Cinema Series. \nAt a time when women\, people of color\, and homosexuals were confined to the margins of society\, Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965)\, best known for A Raisin in the Sun\, boldly challenged U.S. society to live up to its ideals. Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart tells the dramatic story of the young\, gifted and black woman who chose words to fight injustice—on stage and off. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2018-Jan-8]

SUMMARY:Public Reception\, Let Me Remember by belit saÄŸ
DESCRIPTION:The Squeaky Wheel will host a Public Reception for Let Me Remember by belit saÄŸ\, on display through March 23. \nSqueaky Wheel Film & Media Art Center presents Let Me Remember\, the first solo exhibition of artist and videoactivist belit saÄŸ (Netherlands/Turkey) in North America. Comprised of five new video installations\, Let Me Remember functions as an investigation into the state of being racialized in Europe\, taking a series of brutal murders by the German National Socialist Underground (NSU) as its context. The NSU was a terror group that killed ten people and planted bombs in migrant neighborhoods between 2000–2008. German media reports at the time ignored the racial motivations of their violence. belit saÄŸ's work explores how media imagery can render the visibility (and invisibility) of personhood in a personal and essayistic form. The works in Let Me Remember bring together archival footage of the NSU's victims\, images of objects from the crime scenes\, and transcripts of the trials made by local activist groups to ask questions on how white supremacy and whiteness in a European context affect and change narratives. Squeaky Wheel is proud to present the first North American exhibition of this emerging artist\, and bring to the public the acuity with which saÄŸ questions the role of media. \n [source: Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center website\, 2018-Jan-15]

SUMMARY:Ray (Paradise) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ray (Paradise\, Andrei Konchalovsky\, Russia/Germany 2016\, 130 min.\, DCP\, Yiddish\, Russian\, French\, German w/subtitles) as part of the Primal Screen series. \nEurope\, World War II. A family man with no strong political convictions is a passive accomplice to the cruelties of the Gestapo against the non-Aryans. In the same town where he lives\, Olga\, an aristocratic Russian émigré\, has joined the French Resistance. Arrested by the Nazis for hiding two Jewish boys\, the young and beautiful woman is sent to a concentration camp\, where she sees death in the face\, eventually finding an unexpected chance of escaping to Switzerland. Her harrowing story\, however\, isn't conveyed through the rhetoric on the Holocaust tragedy of mainstream Hollywood cinema. Filmed with 35mm and 16mm cameras in a sumptuous black and white reminiscent of classical filmmaking\, this parable of human resilience and moral dilemmas is told from multiple viewpoints: the heroine\, the German officer who becomes her lover\, and a French collaborationist of the Vichy regime. Their stories\, reflections\, and emotions are conveyed to a mysterious interviewer\, punctuating the action with brief but poignant moments of truth. It's a bold statement from veteran director Konchalovsky (The Inner Circle\, Runaway Train)\, who divided the critics at the Venice Film Festival with his unusual approach to storytelling about the unspeakable. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Jan-15]
