SUMMARY:Science and Sustainability: Mathematical Modeling to Support Management Decision Making in the Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Atkinson will discuss Science and Sustainability: Mathematical Modeling to Support Management Decision Making in the Great Lakes in Gavett Hall #301 on the UofR Campus. \nProf. Joseph Atkinson\, Professor of Civil\, Structural and Environmental Engineering; Director\, Great Lakes Program\, University at Buffalo\, will talk on how mechanistic mathematical models can provide a critical component in natural resource management\, allowing "what if" scenario testing and playing a key role in adaptive management. This talk will provide an overview of the use of such models\, with a focus on issues relevant to the Great Lakes\, Lake Ontario in particular. A general overview of mechanistic mathematical modeling will be presented\, along with applications to several specific examples related to algae bloom concerns. Recent and current work in Lake Ontario will be highlighted. \n [source: University of Rochester events calendar\, 2017-Oct-9]

SUMMARY:Outer and Inner Space\, Lupe screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden Outer and Inner Space (Andy Warhol\, U.S. 1966\, 33 min.\, 2 x 16mm)\, and Lupe (Andy Warhol\, U.S. 1966\, 36 min.\, 2 x 16mm) as part of the Warhol series. \nEdie Sedgwick\, Warhol's favorite superstar\, appears in more than ten of his films; Outer and Inner Space and Lupe are two of the most conceptually complex. Both consist of two reels shown together side-by-side. Projected thus\, Outer and Inner Space becomes a quadruple portrait of Sedgwick\, since each reel shows her seated next to her own video image\, to whose sound she sometimes reacts. Shot in luscious color\, Lupe is supposedly a biopic about Lupe Valez based on Kenneth Anger's story about her suicide in Hollywood Babylon. Billy Name gives Edie a haircut\, and she does her nails\, while in the adjacent reel she moves about a luxurious apartment in the Dakota\, the famous New York City apartment building. Watch for the unexpected ending! \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Oct-9]
