DESCRIPTION:Harry Lang will discuss his new book\, Fighting in the shadows : untold stories of deaf people in the Civil War in RIT/NTID's CSD Student Development Center\, room 1300/1310. \nDeaf and hard-of-hearing people were extensively involved in the American Civil War\, yet no detailed summary has previously been published on their participation. Supporting both sides of the conflict\, they participated as soldiers\, writers\, doctors\, nurses\, spies and assumed a variety of other roles. They emerged from the shadows to gain further control of their own destiny as American citizens. \n [source: NTID Campus Events and Activities page\, 2017-Aug-28]

SUMMARY:A Farewell to Arms screening (2017-Sep-6 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Farewell to Arms (1932) (Frank Borzage\, U.S. 1932\, 95 min.\, 35mm) as part of the WWI series. \nErnest Hemingway's great novel was first translated to the screen in this powerfully memorable melodrama from Hollywood's Pre-Code era. Performers Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes bring to life the story of a tragic love affair between a soldier and a nurse during World War I. Recently preserved by the George Eastman Museum in collaboration with the UCLA Film and Television Archive\, the film will be presented in a new 35mm print that showcases the vivid cinematography by the great Charles Lang\, who won an Oscar for his achievement. \n [source: George Eastman Museum \, 2017-Aug-28]
