SUMMARY:2017 Rochester Teen Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Teen filmmakers in the Rochester region and throughout the United States are being recognized for their filmmaking skills at this summer's 2017 Rochester Teen Film Festival. This year\, young filmmakers will again have a chance to earn the Philip Seymour Hoffman Award\, which honors the life and legacy of the late Academy Award-winning actor and Fairport native. The annual award is given to the teen whose film is chosen by the judges as "Best of Fest" and was established in association with the Hoffman family. Along with The Philip Seymour Hoffman Award is the Alex Ketchek Award for Best Animated Film is in memory of Alex Ketchek\, a 2010 Rochester Teen Film Festival finalist who tragically passed away in 2013. The purpose of the festival is to honor the work of urban\, suburban and rural teen filmmakers and give young people an authentic opportunity to participate in a real film festival. All submissions are judged by a jury and finalists have been elected to have their films shown at The Little. \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-Aug-7]

SUMMARY:Tabitha Soren—Fantasy Life: Baseball and the American Dream lecture
DESCRIPTION:In 2002\, Tabitha Soren first began photographing a group of minor league draft picks for the Oakland A's—young men coming into the major league farm system straight from high school or college. Since then\, she has followed the players through their baseball lives\, an alternate reality of long bus rides\, on-field injuries\, friendships and marriages entered and exited\, constant motion\, and very hard work\, often for very little return. Some of the subjects\, like Nick Swisher and Joe Blanton\, have gone on to become well-known\, respected players at the highest level of the game. Some left baseball to pursue other lines of work\, such as selling insurance and coal mining. Others have struggled with poverty and even homelessness. Fifteen years after that first shoot\, Soren's series and book Fantasy Life provides a selection of these stories\, gathering together a richly textured series of photographs taken on the field and behind the scenes at games\, along with commentaries by each of the players and memorabilia from their lives. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jul-31]

SUMMARY:A League of Their Own screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A League of Their Own (Penny Marshall\, U.S. 1992\, 128 min.\, 35mm) as part of the America's Favorite Pastime series. \nWhen candy tycoon Walter Harvey gets wind of the impending shutdown of professional baseball due to World War II\, he posits a revolutionary idea: create a women's baseball league in its place! In Oregon\, competitive sisters Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty) are recruited by a scout and brought to Chicago\, where they form a team that goes on to transform the perceptions of men and the lives of women across the nation. Based on the true story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League\, this rousing comedy remains hilarious and heartfelt\, and was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2012. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jul-31]
