SUMMARY:Olympic Pride\, American Prejudice screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Olympic Pride\, American Prejudice (Deborah Riley Draper\, Germany / U.S. 2016\, 82 min.) with Deborah Riley Draper in attendance for a discussion as part of the Black Cinema Series. \nOlympic Pride\, American Prejudice explores the experiences of 18 African American Olympians who defied Jim Crow and Adolf Hitler to win hearts and medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Set against the strained and turbulent atmosphere of a racially divided America\, which was torn between boycotting Hitler's Olympics or participating in the Third Reich's grandest affair\, the film follows 16 men and two women before\, during and after their heroic turn at the Summer Olympic Games in Berlin. They represented a country that considered them second class citizens and competed in a country that rolled out the red carpet in spite of an undercurrent of Aryan superiority and anti-Semitism. They were world heroes yet returned home to a short-lived glory. This story is complicated. This story is triumphant but unheralded. This story is a vital part of history and is as relevant today as it was almost 80 years ago. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Feb-27]

SUMMARY:Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea\, Gianfranco Rosi\, Italy/France 2016\, 108 min.\, DCP\, Italian w/subtitles) as part of the Survey of Contemporary Italian Cinema series. \nThe first documentary to ever win the top award at the Berlin International Film Festival\, Fire at Sea takes place in Lampedusa\, a once peaceful Mediterranean island that has become a major entry point for African refugees into Europe. There\, we meet Samuele\, a 12-year-old boy who lives simply\, climbing rocks by the shore and playing with his slingshot. Yet nearby we also witness thousands of men\, women and children trying to survive the crossing from Africa in boats that are too small for such a journey. Filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi masterfully places these realities side by side\, and in so doing creates a remarkable third narrative that jolts us into a new understanding of what is really happening in the Mediterranean today. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Mar-13]

SUMMARY:Life Is A Dream theatrical performance (2017-Mar-17 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Considered one of the outstanding Spanish dramas of all time\, this 17th-century allegory explores the mysteries of human destiny\, the illusory nature of existence\, and the struggle between predestination and free will. On the basic plot structure of King's suspicions of his son's role in an impending revolution\, the playwright builds a dramatic edifice of theatricality\, rich in symbolism and metaphor\, expressed in magnificent poetry. \n [source: Bread and Water Theatre \, 2017-Feb-27]

SUMMARY:Sketching the Soul theatrical performance (2017-Mar-17 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC is hosting a performance of Sketching the Soul by Jacqueline Lynch. \nChelsea Logan is an artist struggling with the conflict between her growing celebrity and her Amish upbringing\, which she left behind to pursue her ambition\, and which she neglected to mention to Mike (her boyfriend)\, new friends and colleagues. The past and present\, celebrity and spiritually come to a head one frenetic weekend when her younger sister Sarah arrives unexpectedly. Chelsea must explain her sister\, and the lifestyle she kept a secret\, to Mike\, an attorney struggling with his own ethical priorities\, and to Maureen Nash an aggressive journalist who arrives with a photographer for an interview (during which Chelsea\, with a rather un-Amish-like attitude\, pummels the photographer into surrendering the film he has shot of Sarah!) Sarah and Mike together help Chelsea to accept and acknowledge the power of her Amish heritage and to move toward a future she had not expected. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2017-Mar-13]
