SUMMARY:July '64 screening (2016-Nov-20 @ 2:00 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen July '64 (Carvin Eison\, U.S. 2006\, 60 min.) \nJuly '64 tells the story of a historic three-day race riot that erupted in two African American neighborhoods in Rochester\, New York. On the night of July 24\, 1964\, frustration and resentment brought on by institutional racism\, overcrowding\, lack of job opportunity\, and police dog attacks exploded in racial violence that brought Rochester to its knees. Directed by Carvin Eison and produced by Chris Christopher\, July '64 combines historic archival footage\, news reports\, and interviews with witnesses and participants to dig deeply into the causes and effects of the historic disturbance. \n [source: Cinema e-mail\, 2016-Nov-17]

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:November 20th marks Transgender Day of Remembrance a day in which we come together to honor the memory of those lost. TDOR takes on many forms depending on the needs of the community\, but at each observance across the country we take a few minutes to speak the names of the people who were lost. All too often the media\, the police\, and the victims families erase their trans identity. On TDOR we remember all those whose lives were cut short by saying their names and acknowledging them as their authentic selves. This year's observance was a collaborative effort aimed at bringing the community together to mourn\, to remember\, and to say that this senseless violence needs to stop. Immediately following the observance at MLK Park\, there will be a community gathering at Open Arms MCC\, with light refreshments. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-Nov-14]

SUMMARY:Nora Prentiss screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Nora Prentiss (Vincent Sherman\, U.S. 1947\, 111 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Noir Effect series. \nThe murder of Dr. Richard Talbot is the central mystery of this film. In flashback\, we see that he was a dedicated family man until he happens to be witness to a car accident. The victim\, Nora Prentiss (Ann Sheridan)\, is a beautiful young club singer that Talbot becomes increasingly obsessed with and begins to pursue. She resists initially\, but soon they become entangled in a plot that turns deadly. Sherman's handling of the noir style and sensibility underscores the power of the genre as he turns in his best work in this twisty\, dark\, doomed romance. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Nov-14]
