SUMMARY:Artist's Talk: Catherine Opie
DESCRIPTION:World-renowned artist Catherine Opie will speak in conjunction with her exhibition Catherine Opie: 700 Nimes Road. Her work gained attention in the mid-1990s when her photograph Self-Portrait/Pervert\, 1994\, was exhibited at the Whitney Museum of Art. Since then\, she has been revered for her ability to photograph the intimacy of community\, as it is produced through place\, symbols\, events\, and self-identification. Her photographs record American diversity with both portraits and landscapes. Her unique form of social documentary photography has led her to create work about subjects ranging from lesbian families and San Francisco's S&M community to high school football players and surfers. Her landscape work has addressed strip malls and freeway junctions in Los Angeles\, as well as formal architectural studies in Chicago and New York. Her most recent body of work\, Portraits and Landscapes\, combines the two genres\, drawing upon art historical references such as old master paintings. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Sep-26]

SUMMARY:1916: The Irish Rebellion screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen 1916: The Irish Rebellion (Pat Collins\, Ruan Magan\, U.S. / Ireland 2016\, 86 min.) \nNarrated by Liam Neeson\, this landmark documentary tells the dramatic story of the events that took place in Dublin during Easter Week 1916\, when a small group of Irish rebels took on the might of the British Empire. The documentary — featuring a combination of rarely seen archival footage\, new segments filmed on location worldwide\, and interviews with leading international experts — also uncovers the untold story of the central role Irish Americans played in the lead-up to the rebellion. Although defeated militarily\, the men and women of the Easter Rising would wring a moral victory from the jaws of defeat and inspire countless freedom struggles throughout the world — from Ireland to India. \n [source: Little Theatre e-mail\, 2016-Sep-29]

SUMMARY:Chronik der Anna Magdalena Bach (The Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Chronik der Anna Magdalena Bach (The Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach\, Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet\, West Germany/Italy 1968\, DCP\, 94 min.\, German w/subtitles). \nThe art and life of Johann Sebastian Bach as observed by his loyal wife Anna Magdalena Bach. This is one of the most unusual\, beautiful\, and formally rigorous films about music or art. "The point of departure for our Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach was the idea of a film in which music would be used—not as accompaniment\, nor as commentary—but as raw material. . . . We also wanted to film a love story like no other: a woman talking about her husband who she loved unto his death. That's the story: no biography can be made without an external point of view\, and here it is the consciousness of Anna Magdalena Bach. . . . [In this film] we have almost entirely a documentary reality—the actual music and actual manuscript pages\, real musicians—and only one-seventeenth of fiction\, and despite it all\, the totality becomes very nearly a novel. . . . [There is] no divorce in Bach between art\, life and intellect\, sacred and secular music." — Jean-Marie Straub \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Sep-26]
