SUMMARY:Rounding Third theatrical performance (2016-Aug-14 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of Rounding Third by Richard Dresser. \nRounding Third\, a hilarious play by Richard Dresser\, introduces us to two Little League coaches — one a veteran\, the other a new recruit — and their markedly different personal circumstances and philosophies about the game. The audience is the stand-in for the team\, so the coaches speak directly to the audience about competition\, character\, punctuality\, and the importance of wearing the right equipment. Don\, played by Jeff Siuda\, is the tough\, blue-collar\, win-at-all-costs veteran coach whose son is the star pitcher. Michael\, played by Ross Amstey\, is a newcomer both to the town and to baseball. He's a corporate executive who agrees to be Don's assistant because he wants a special activity with his son\, who's never played baseball before. Out of these conflicting philosophies\, the real issues of the play emerge: how should we raise our children? Since we live in such a ferociously competitive society\, do we protect our children as long as possible? Or do we prepare them to be tough enough to win? You might be surprised at how you think about these essential questions. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-Aug-8]

SUMMARY:Ran screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ran (Akira Kurosawa\, Japan/France 1985\, 160 min.\, 35mm\, Japanese w/subtitles). \nKurosawa's spellbinding epic of feudal disorder focuses on the alienation brought on by man's lust for power and depicts it with violence set to classical cadences. Shakespeare's King Lear refashioned through samurai stylings\, Ran centers on warlord Hidetora's abdication and decision to divide his holdings between his three sons. Seen on the big screen\, Kurosawa's mass orchestration of movement\, color\, landscape\, and spectacle achieve a jaw-dropping beauty. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-8]

SUMMARY:Maurice screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Maurice (James Ivory\, U.K. 1987\, 140 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Summer of Solidarity series. \nFollowing his successful adaptation of E. M. Forster's novel A Room with a View\, James Ivory adapted this curiously minor Forster work and created something major. Maurice\, while studying in Cambridge\, finds himself falling in love with his classmate Clive. Succumbing to the pressures of British society\, they are forced to keep their relationship a secret—taking a toll on both their lives. Ivory's beautiful direction\, Pierre Lhomme's unmistakable cinematography\, and the talented cast breathe new life into Forster's novel on the perils of being an outsider in a culture of conformity. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-8]
