SUMMARY:Turning The Art World Inside Out screening
DESCRIPTION:The MAG will host a screening of Turning The Art World Inside Out (Jack Cocker\, U.K. 2013\, 69 min.) as part of the Reel Mind Film Festival\, preceded by an Art Exhibit of Breaking the Silence\, "an art exhibit curated by the Mental Health Association's Creative Wellness Opportunities". \nAfter the huge success of shows in Venice\, London and Paris\, interest in Outsider Art has never been higher. SUMMARY:Trapped screening (2016-May-17 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Trapped (Dawn Porter\, U.S. 2016\, 90 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nFrom 2011 to 2013\, hundreds of regulations were passed restricting access to abortion in America. Reproductive rights advocates refer to these as "TRAP" laws\, or Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers. While these laws have been enacted in 11 states\, Southern clinics\, in particular have been hit hardest and are now in a fight for survival. In Texas\, less than half of the clinics open in 2013 are still functioning. In Alabama\, three clinics struggle to keep their doors open. And in Mississippi\, just one abortion clinic remains. Some of the most common requirements with which clinics struggle to comply include: requiring physicians to obtain admitting privileges from local hospitals for any doctor performing abortions\, requiring that clinics undertake expensive renovations such as widening hallways by a few inches to accommodate wheelchairs and gurneys they will rarely use\, and requiring other regulations usually reserved for hospitals even though abortion providers rarely require such a high level of care. But even in this hostile environment the doctors\, clinic owners and staff refuse to give up. Trapped interweaves the personal stories behind these regulatory battles: from the physician who crisscrosses the country assuring medical services are available; to the strong women and men who run the clinics; to the lawyers leading the legal charge to eliminate these laws; to the women they are all determined to help. In this feature length character driven film\, our main characters fight alongside a dedicated cadre of attorneys to preserve abortion rights in a country living with the mistaken belief that Roe v. Wade still protects a woman's right to choose. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:As Mil e Uma Noites: Volume 1\, O Inquieto (Arabian Nights: Volume 1\, The Restless One) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen As Mil e Uma Noites: Volume 1\, O Inquieto (Arabian Nights: Volume 1\, The Restless One\, Miguel Gomes\, Portugal/France/Germany/Switzerland 2015\, 125 min.\, DCP\, Portuguese w/subtitles). \nIn Portugal—a country in crisis—a film director proposes to build fictional stories from the miserable reality he is immersed in. However\, failing to find meaning in his work\, he runs away and leaves the beautiful Scheherazade to stand in his shoes. She will require enthusiasm and courage so as not to bore the King with sad stories of this country. As nights go past\, restlessness leads to desolation and in turn to enchantment! Therefore Scheherazade organizes the stories she tells the King in three volumes. In Volume 1 Scheherazade tells of the restlessness that befell the country: "It hath reached me\, O auspicious King\, that in a sad country among all countries\, where people dream of mermaids and whales\, and unemployment is spreading. In certain places\, forests burn into the night despite the falling rain; men and women long to set out to sea in the middle of winter. Sometimes there are animals that talk although it is highly improbable that they are listened to. In this country\, where things are not what they appear to be\, men of power promenade on camels and hide permanent and shameful erections; they await the moment when taxes are collected so they can pay a certain wizard whom . . . " And seeing the morning break\, Scheherazade fell silent. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-9]
