SUMMARY:Artist's Talk: Penny Wolin\, "Descendants of light : American photographers of Jewish ancestry\, 1853-2015"
DESCRIPTION:Penny Wolin will discuss her book Descendants of light : American photographers of Jewish ancestry\, 1853-2015 in the Dryden Theatre at the George Eastman Museum. \nPhotographer and author Penny Wolin spent eight years traveling throughout the United States photographing and interviewing more than seventy American Jewish photographers. The Eastman Museum is proud to welcome Wolin to discuss this work\, which is the subject of her new book\, Descendants of Light: American Photographers of Jewish Ancestry. Wolin photographed each artist and interviewed them about possible connections between Jewish ancestry and the practice of photography. She then re-photographed their heirloom ancestral photographs dating as far back as the mid-1850s. Wolin's audiovisual conversation will feature excerpts from her interviews and full-screen photographs. Within these multilayered materials\, Wolin gives voice and vision to the photographers' views on the nature of the photographic medium and its intersection with American Jewish culture. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:Loosen The Bible Belt Tour
DESCRIPTION:Kristen Becker\, and Pastor Jay Bakker will perform at Babeville. \nComedian Kristen Becker (Founder\, Dykes of Hazard Comedy) and Pastor Jay Bakker ( Founder\, Revolution Church\, Host of This is Radiocast Podcast) are teaming up in the name of equality. Becker\, an outspoken lesbian comedian\, stumbled across a copy of the documentary "One Punk Under God" which features Pastor Bakker and his church\, Revolution Ministries. Becker was enthralled with Pastor Bakker's personal revelation that the LGBTQ community was unfairly being shut out of the Evangelical church. Seeing his genuine interest in doing what was right and knowing a large percentage of the southern friends were being raised Evangelical\, but then shut out of their own churches\, Becker reached out to Bakker. A few Twitter messages and emails later\, "Loosen the Bible Belt" was born. This spring\, the duo are kicking off a 15-city tour in Buffalo at Asbury Hall. \n [source: Babeville website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:Moonraker screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Moonraker (Lewis Gilbert\, U.K./France/U.S. 1979\, 126 min.\, 35mm). \nIn 1977\, James Bond and The Spy Who Loved Me were outdone at the box office by a newcomer to the multiplex: Star Wars. Eon Productions gleaned a lesson from this\, and just as how Live and Let Die was influenced by '70s blaxploitation flicks\, Moonraker would incorporate elements of the now-popular space adventure genre. For better or worse\, this concept was paired with a bizarre sense of humor and a level of camp that makes Diamonds Are Forever look modest by comparison. This film marks the final appearance of both veteran actor Bernard Lee as M and Richard Kiel's giant metal-toothed henchman\, Jaws. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-9]
