SUMMARY:Tuesday Topics: Fearlessly Serving the Homeless
DESCRIPTION:At today's Tuesday Topics in Kate Gleason Auditorium of the Bausch and Lomb Library Building\, Sister Grace Miller will discuss Fearlessly Serving the Homeless. \nSister Grace Miller has provided shelter and services for the homeless at the House of Mercy for 30 years\, and now at age 80 has no plans to retire from living out the values of her family and faith. Come hear how this fearless defender of the poor and homeless came to this purpose in mid-life\, has been criticized and even arrested\, yet remains unafraid of the work she does on the streets of Rochester. \n [source: Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library website\, 2016-Feb-1]

SUMMARY:Contemporary Book Discussion Group\, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot
DESCRIPTION:Irondequoit Public Library is hosting a Contemporary Book Discussion Group on The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. \nHer name was Henrietta Lacks\, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors\, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine. If you could pile all HeLa cells ever grown onto a scale\, they'd weigh more than 50 million metric tons—as much as a hundred Empire State Buildings. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer\, viruses\, and the atom bomb's effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization\, cloning\, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown\, buried in an unmarked grave. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2016-Feb-1]
