DESCRIPTION:John Dale\, a middle-aged bachelor and prominent businessman\, has a challenging job for Anne Weston\, proprietor of the local rent shop. He wants to rent a Christmas\, not just with a tree and Christmas carols\, but complete with a wife\, a family\, and all of the happiness for which he has been secretly longing. Anne hires local theater actors to play the part\, but when everyone comes down with the flu\, her last hope is to turn to the local orphanage. Unable to find someone to play the Mother\, Anne steps in at the last minute to play the role herself. SUMMARY:Snow White screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Snow White (J. Searle Dawley\, U.S. 1916\, 73 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli.  \nParamount Pictures' first special Christmas release was this legendary and long-thought-lost version of Snow White starring Marguerite Clark\, who had played the part on Broadway. Clark's popularity in the 1910s rivaled Mary Pickford's\, but almost all of Clark's films (unlike Pickford's) are lost today. This enchanting film was the direct inspiration for Walt Disney's 1937 version\, and such was Disney's enthusiasm and respect for the earlier telling that he brought Clark to the Hollywood premiere of his film. In this 1916 version\, the interior sets were brought from the Broadway production to the New York studio and made even more fanciful.
