SUMMARY:The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution (Stanley Nelson\, U.S. 2015\, 113 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nChange was coming to America and the fault lines could no longer be ignored—cities were burning\, Vietnam was exploding\, and disputes raged over equality and civil rights. A new revolutionary culture was emerging and it sought to drastically transform the system. The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense would\, for a short time\, put itself at the vanguard of that change. The Black Panthers: Vanguard Of The Revolution is the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party\, its significance to the broader American culture\, its cultural and political awakening for black people\, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Stanley Nelson goes straight to the source\, weaving a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police\, FBI informants\, journalists\, white supporters and detractors\, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it. Featuring Kathleen Cleaver\, Jamal Joseph\, and many others\, The Black Panthers: Vanguard Of The Revolution is an essential history and a vibrant chronicle of this pivotal movement that birthed a new revolutionary culture in America. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:The Duchess Of Malfi theatrical performance (2015-Oct-20 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Wallbyrd Theatre Company is thrilled to present John Webster's macabre revenge tragedy The Duchess Of Malfi October 15th-24th at the MuCCC Theater in Rochester. This visually stunning production will cast Webster's classic tragedy in a new light as the show comes to life against the backdrop of the sweeping\, war torn landscape of the American Civil War. Defying the wishes of her two brothers\, the newly widowed Duchess of Malfi is quick to secretly marry her true love and steward\, Antonio. When their illicit union is finally brought to light\, it will unleash a reign of terror\, cruelty\, madness\, and murder that will tear country and kin to the ground. First performed by Shakespeare's own company\, the King's Men in 1614\, this Jacobean classic has been heralded among the most grotesque\, whirlwind thrillers of the English theater\, composed with a poetic elegance and nuance to rival the bard himself. In keeping with the company's mission to explore "living classics\," this production has been re-imagined\, combining Webster's expressive and eloquent verse with the raw\, war ravaged setting of the 1860's antebellum south. In doing so\, this production will explore how race\, class\, gender\, and culture defined and defied a tumultuous period in American history. Due to the complexity and sheer scale of this work\, this is a rare chance to see one of Webster's most acclaimed masterpieces embodied on the American stage. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Oct-12]

SUMMARY:Berg-Ejvind och hans hustru (The Outlaw and His Wife) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Berg-Ejvind och hans hustru (The Outlaw and His Wife\, Victor Sjöström\, Sweden 1918\, 100 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nA classic of Swedish cinema\, directed by grandmaster Victor Sjöström (The Phantom Carriage\, The Wind). The film\, based on the 1911 play by Jóhann Sigurjónsson\, follows Ejvind\, who has been forced into stealing food to support his starving family. Escaped and on the run\, he comes to work at the farm of the widowed Halla. The two fall in love\, but as his past is revealed the pair flee into the Icelandic mountainous wilderness and remain outlaws. Rightfully hailed for its stunning outdoor cinematography and painterly obsession with landscapes and people within them\, this film is also remarkable for the emotional honesty that Sjöström brings out of the players. Himself an actor (and he continued as such for many years after his directing career ended)\, Sjöström paid a great deal of attention to the process of acting\, and requested several takes of some scenes until he felt he had gotten to the emotional core. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Oct-12]
