SUMMARY:Artist's Talk: Rachel Sussman
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 6 p.m. in the Dryden Theatre is an Artist's Talk with Rachel Sussman on her work in the In the Garden show. \nIn this special edition of our photography lecture series\, Wish You Were Here\, Rachel Sussman will discuss her work on view in In the Garden and her series The Oldest Living Things in the World. Sussman's photographs of the world's varied geographies explore questions about nature\, humanity\, and time. Critic Jerry Saltz says of her work: "These stately pictures quiet the soul . . . Sussman brings you to the place where science\, beauty\, and eternity meet." \n [source: Eastman House calendar\, 2015-May-18]

SUMMARY:Gordon Brown\, 50 Things that Photoshop Learned from the Darkroom
DESCRIPTION:The Photographic Historical Society (TPHS) meets tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Barnes and Noble. Tonight\, Gordon Brown will discuss 50 Things that Photoshop Learned from the Darkroom. \nFor people familiar with digital editing programs\, Gordon Brown will describe how digital photo-editing programs such as Photoshop depended upon—and were built upon—the conventional historical techniques used in the darkroom. Using an easy-to-understand Powerpoint slideshow\, Gordon will demonstrate how digital photography techniques evolved from the conventional darkroom techniques. Attendees will also learn how Photoshop improved upon traditional processes and added features that would be difficult\, if not impossible\, to do in the darkroom. \n [source: Facebook\, 2015-May-18]

SUMMARY:Love Is Colder than Death screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 8 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen Liebe ist kälter als der Tod (Love Is Colder than Death\, R. W. Fassbinder\, West Germany 1969\, 88 min.\, 35mm\, German w/subtitles). \nFassbinder himself plays small-time pimp\, Franz\, in this film that could seem more indebted to the nouvelle vague than to Douglas Sirk or Bertolt Brecht. While ostensibly a gangster film\, Love Is Colder than Death really concerns a complex love triangle\, between Franz\, his prostitute girlfriend\, Joanna (Hanna Schygulla)\, and Bruno (Ulli Lommel)\, the member of a crime syndicate that Franz refuses to join. While Fassbinder's film does have much in common with a French New Wave work such as Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (1959)\, it shares little of the latter's carefree exuberance. Ultimately foregrounded here is a bleak precision and sense of alienation that would go on to characterize Fassbinder's work as a whole. Love Is Colder than Death was Fassbinder's first feature film\, and the first installment in what he loosely conceived as a gangster trilogy\, which the Dryden will screen in its entirety (see also Saturday\, May 23\, and Thursday\, May 28). \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-18]
