The Dryden will screen Wandafuru raifu (After Life, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Japan 1998, 118 min., DCP, Japanese w/subtitles) as part of the Voyages and Discoveries series.

In an extraordinary, lyrical, gentle, and touching film about reassessing one's own life, the protagonists, all recently deceased, arrive at a slightly crumbling institution, where they are each instructed to assess their lives and choose one important moment—a memory they can take with them forever. With sparse dialogue, the film manages to convey profound emotions and sentiments through moments of extreme stillness. It is a wonderful voyage of discovery, not only for those who recently died, but also for their assigned caseworkers themselves.
