Videodrome screening

2015-Oct-22 @ 20:00 - 21:27

The Dryden will screen Videodrome (David Cronenberg, Canada 1983, 87 min., 35mm).

When sleazy, opportunistic producer of sensationalist television Max Renn (James Woods) is shown an intercepted signal of a mysterious show being broadcast from Malaysia that he believes will revolutionize television programming, he jumps on it and broadcasts it. Titled Videodrome, the pixilated, static images show masked men torturing unnamed victims. In an attempt to find the source of Videodrome and the mystery behind it, Max is absorbed into a hallucinatory world of malleable bodies and technology, where a larger conspiracy of mind control threatens enslavement and addiction on the future of television viewers. With this fever dream of paranoia, Cronenberg takes his trademark, techno-organically transgressive vision to a whole new level, eerily predicting the current technology-reliant culture obsessed with reality television and torture porn. Long live the new flesh!
