Trick screening

2019-Oct-15 @ 20:30 - 21:59

The Dryden will screen Trick (Jim Fall, U.S. 1999, 89 min., 35mm) followed by a Discussion with director Jim Fall as part of the ImageOut of the Archives series.

Trick is truly a boy-meets-go-go-boy Manhattan fairy tale, but real life intrudes when its would-be lovers have nowhere to do the deed. Christian Campbell plays Gabriel, a shy aspiring musical-theatre writer who takes a chance on John Paul Pitoc's hunky dancer, Mark. As they hunt for hookup sanctuary, they stumble into piano bars and dance clubs and encounter various relationships as they wander the streets of New York City. Could a potential one-night stand lead to something more? In today's Grindr-dominated world, the film might have been more cynical or its characters more jaded. Instead, Jim Fall's breezy direction invites you to enjoy every step of Gabriel and Mark's journey while convincing you that these two guys might actually make it after the credits roll. Trick may start with hormones, but it leaves you with a full heart. To celebrate the film's twentieth anniversary this year, we are proud to bring Trick back to Rochester as our ImageOut of the Archives selection.
