The Sound of Music screening
2019-Dec-08 @ 14:00 - 16:52
The Dryden will screen The Sound of Music (Robert Wise, U.S. 1965, 172 min., 35mm) as part of the Canon series.
Sweeping helicopter shots owe everything to this widescreen film as the Austrian countryside fills the screen and Julie Andrews's voice fills our ears. This enduring story of a novice turned nanny who wins the hearts of her charges—and their father—while outrunning the burgeoning Nazi threat remains one of the defining works in American film. The songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein are deceptively simple, reflecting the attitudes of the children, yet carry sentiments that ring throughout the years. The film was adapted from a stage show that greatly limited the soaring vistas and elegant cinematography evident on the big screen.
