A suppressed Iowa housewife Francesca (Meryl Streep) sends her farming husband and two children away to the Illinois State Fair, only to start a four-day passionate affair with a freewheeling photographer Robert (Clint Eastwood), who is visiting the region on assignment from National Geographic magazine. This patient rural romance was adapted from the eponymous bestselling novel, and represents Clint Eastwood both as actor and director at his thoughtful best.
