Rio Grande screening
2016-Mar-13 @ 14:00 - 15:45
The Dryden will screen Rio Grande (John Ford, U.S. 1950, 105 min., 35mm).
The third in John Ford's now recognized Cavalry Trilogy, Rio Grande stations Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke (John Wayne) on the expansive Texas frontier, charged with defending a group of settlers from marauding Apaches. Married, though estranged from his wife, and emotionally detached from the son he hasn't seen in fifteen years, Yorke reunites with both amid the escalating American Indian Wars, but the reunion is strained. Yorke's son Jeff has been assigned to his regiment after flunking out of West Point. His wife Kathleen (Maureen O'Hara) arrives shortly thereafter to take Jeff home, but he refuses. Forced to confront past resentment, the couple reexamines their relationship, one which film historian David Thomson called "one of the most interesting Ford ever created."
