Panel Discussion: Matter and Memory in the Digital Age
2016-Oct-22 @ 13:00 - 14:00
The George Eastman Museum will host a Panel Discussion on Matter and Memory in the Digital Age with James Welling, Marco Breuer, and Diane Meyer.
In association with the exhibition A Matter of Memory: Photography as Object in the Digital Age, the museum is hosting a panel discussion among three artists who contributed work to the exhibition. James Welling, who has been exploring and experimenting with photographic ideas and materials since the 1970s, is the anchor panelist. His co-panelists will be Marco Breuer and Diane Meyer. Breuer burns, scrapes, sands, scratches, and otherwise activates photographic materials, as though searching for the physical connection between matter and memory. Meyer also examines the enigmatic power of photographs as material objects, by embroidering her own snapshots. Together, in a conversation moderated by exhibition curator Lisa Hostetler, Welling, Breuer, and Meyer will discuss how the transition from analog to digital photographic technologies is changing the landscape of memory. Following the panel discussion, join artist Phil Chang in the galleries to watch as he replaces his unfixed prints with new ones that will fade in a matter of hours.
