Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (Nosferatu) screening
2019-Oct-29 @ 19:30 - 20:51
The Dryden will screen Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (Nosferatu, F. W. Murnau, Germany 1922, 81 min., 16mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli as part of the Halloween series.
F. W. Murnau, an undisputed master of German expressionist cinema, mounts the screen's first feature-length adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Young husband Hutter is sent by his employer to Transylvania to arrange the purchase of a house in the city of Bremen by the mysterious Count Orlok. When the count moves in across the street, Hutter and his wife consult The Book of Vampires to learn how to deal with their new neighbor. Eerily symbolic, memorably horrific and unsettling, the film remains the most imaginative, stylized, and hypnotic of all vampire movies, featuring Max Schreck's now-legendary performance as Orlok.
