Nim-ah Geu Gang-eul Gun-neo-ji Ma-oh (My Love, Don't Cross That River) screening
2016-Jul-28 @ 20:00 - 21:26
The Dryden will screen Nim-ah Geu Gang-eul Gun-neo-ji Ma-oh (My Love, Don't Cross That River, Jin Mo-young, South Korea 2014, 86 min., DCP, Korean w/subtitles).
The biggest box-office hit in the history of Korean independent cinema is one of the most heartrending love stories ever told for the big screen. It is a true story, too. Jo is 98 years old. Kang is 89. They have been married for 76 years (national media call them "the 100-year-old lovebirds"), have had twelve children, and still fall asleep hand in hand. The filmmaker followed their life in the countryside over a period of fifteen months, with a fly-on-the-wall restraint, a keen attention for psychological detail, and an exquisite visual sensibility. The dialogue between husband and wife is imbued with the poetry one would expect from an inspired writer, but this is no fiction: "If, by its ending, it hasn't moved you to your core, you have an invulnerable heart" (Filmink). Primal Screen is a special presentation by Paolo Cherchi Usai, Senior Curator, Moving Image Department.
