Much Ado About Nothing screening (2016-Aug-18 @ 8 p.m.)

2016-Aug-18 @ 20:00 - 21:51

The Dryden will screen Much Ado About Nothing (Kenneth Branagh, U.K./U.S. 1993, 111 min., 35mm).

Loosely based on Shakespeare's comedic play of the same title, Much Ado About Nothing presents two young lovers, Hero (Kate Beckinsale) and Claudio (Robert Sean Leonard), who are to be married in a week. Passing the time, they conspire with Don Pedro (Denzel Washington) to set up a "lover's trap" for confirmed bachelor Benedick (Kenneth Branagh) and his favorite sparring partner Beatrice (Emma Thompson). Meanwhile, the evil Don John (Keanu Reeves) conspires to break up the wedding, accusing Hero of infidelity. Michael Keaton gives a great performance as Dogberry, the nonsensical local constable. Directed by Kenneth Branagh and underscored by Patrick Doyle's charming soundtrack, Much Ado About Nothing honors both Shakespeare's verbal delight and Branagh's ability to render classical humor accessible with a distinctive contemporary style.
